I get dropped frames when I use other non-graphic intensive programs while recording video. I'm thinking it may be the hardrive, cuz I have over twice the required CPU power for capture of the highest settings (Athlon 1GHz, 256m of ram, AIW-7500). Do any of you have an AIW-Radeon working with multiple hardrives, and does it let you do things such as AOL IM w/o dropped frames on the highest capture settings?

  2. What are the rpm on the hard drives - meaning, are you using slow 5400rpm hard drives or 7200rpm (or faster)? Also, if they're different speeds, do you have the faster set as master. That could slow down the capture rate. Also, I'd check heavy anti-virus programs if they're running on desktop... such as F-Secure or Norton Anti-Virus.

I'd recommend checking the hard-drives for their speed and then setting the fastest as a master and the slower as a slave. Check are you using DMA settings on your HD as well.

I'm aware of a lot of that information, but I just want to know if I recorded to a seperate HD then the rest of my system, could I use IM w/ no problems with dropped frames?

You need to check your CPU usage (percentage) while using AOL IM to see exactly how much processing time IM is using. Any programs running in the forground or background during capturing can cause dropped frames. That is why all the guides recommend that you stop all other programs while capturing. You could also get a second computer, use one for capturing and the other one for your AOL IM.

Heh. That's the eventual plan, to turn my current computer into a audio/video center of sorts, but That'll be prolly another year when I upgrade before I go to college.
