DVD recorder drive reccomendations?

So this week, I'm going to take the plunge and pick up a new PC. It's going to be a P4 2.2, with 512 megs SDRAM and a humongous hard drive. With the system, I want to buy a DVD recorder, so I thought I'd get some reccomendations.

I want the drive that is most compatible with standard DVD players
I don't really care what format it is, DVD-R, RW, +RW etc... I just want the most compatibility with standalone players, at the best price.

I use an APEX player for VCD, just because it's so fun to noodle with, and also use mostly SOnys in my home theatre setup.

Any help would be appreciated.

Both AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and Intel 2.26GHz Pentium 4 Northwood will cost a little over 200 USD soon - or, they do already now.

DDR-SDRAM modules have become cheaper than SDR-SDRAM modules in some markets. You can probably have 1GB DDR for under 200 USD.

Both in the US and in Japan, Pioneer -04 DVD-R/-RW and Ricoh MP5125A or its Sony/HP version cost a little over 300 USD.

I hope you can get the best configuration for your money.

A drive that burns DVD-R or DVD+R should suffice, although YMMV depending on what DVD players you own. Check the vcdhelp.com database.

A caveat though. DVD-R right now still has the highest proven compatibility. It seems DVD+R is close, but so far it's still early to make a final judgement. If price is an issue, DVD-R might the best bet because the drives are slightly cheaper and the media is more available. I wouldn't completely rule out +R drives though as they are becoming increasingly common and the discs are starting to appear. It depends on what you deem most appropriate for you, and what your standalone players are compatible with.
