  1. My DVAvi -> Mpeg2 conversion is resulting in "blockiness" during certain sceens (Mostly related to splashing or shinny water sceens).

What is the correct term for this "effect" after conversion, so I can do better searchs to find a solution.

I have been up and down the forums and www.deja.com and have not been able to find anything to help out. so I am assuming that blockiness or blocks is NOT the correct term.

    Thanks

    how about "block noise"?
sounds like your average bitrate might be too low, or maybe min. bitrate too low

  3. Blockiness might well be the right term...what encoder are you using and what template? I think it might be a case of either too low a bitrate (as the above post suggests) or a motion search set too low. ...

  4. i have the same problem. what do you recommend? increasing the min bit rate of VBR to about 1500 or 2000? this is the VBR 2 pass template i'm using in tmpgenc:

    VBR 2 pass
    avg bitrate 2520
min bitrate 300 (tmpgenc default, too low right?)
motion precision search - high quality

    thanks,

  5. i've tried everything from soften block noise which makes the movie blurry, but maybe i'm using an incorrect setting. what do you guys use as a setting for soften block noise? i've also tried that max bitrate 2520 for a SVCD, highest quality motion search, and dc bits to 10. anything else?

  6. try using kwags template. download it at www.kvcd.net

  7. but isn't kwag's template for vcd's only? i mean i can change the settings so it supports SVCD's i guess, but will it do?

  8. u can download his DVD template and lower the bitrate so itll fit on a CD-
R or two, and lower the resolution

  9. its mpg... even dvd have some places in them with blocks ...you can really notice it on a hdtv's its the compression.you would have to have a huge file to get rid of them the bigger the file the smaller and fewer the blocks=less compression higher bitrate

  10. ok,my first post ,probably going to make an ass of myself but never mind .i have seen this "block noise"refered to as "artifact" as in mpeg artifact .untill recently i was very dissapointed with vcd quality ,even when using the "highest quality/very slow"setting my results were rubbish ,untill i toyed with the noise reduction feature in tmpgenc .generally if i captured the source material at full dv i will use the default nr setting ,and use the high, but slow motion setting .with other material(badly encoded mpgs etc) i will turn up the nr controls to 50%,and obviously if your material contains a lot of fast movement turn the motion setting up to highest .i have been amazed to find that badly encoded files can be restored to a more acceptable standard using these means .but these are only my findings ,i'll wait for a stoning from the more knowledgable ones among us

  11. I am having the same problem with the "blockiness". If anyone has come up with a overall good solution to the problem with tmpegenc please let us know... I need a template that will help me out... I am getting very frustrated!!

  12. TBSI ,what are you encoding to ,vcd, svcd, dvd? .i can give you templates(one for not so bad source files and one for really bad source files) .but you will have to remember ,the cleaner you want the final mpeg the more time it will take .some of the files i have been doing lately are only maybe 10 minutes and take around 1.5 hours to re-encode ,its quality versus speed .mail me if you want
