I'm experimenting with using some of the free programs that people mention frequently here, like VirtualDub and TMPGenc (in order to get used to how they work while I wait for my capture card to be delivered)

Is there a free utility to crop off a portion(or section) of what appears on the screen?

    thanks

  2. Yepp....there is a cropping feature in vdub...just add your filters to the video and youll find a button namned "Cropping" or so...i usally add the "null transform" and crop on that filter....dunno if this changes the quality or if you should crop on another filter..

    Wertigo,

I'm looking at the filters in VirtualDub right now, and I don't see any "crop" filter(in fact no filters start with "C"...they go right from "brightness/contrast" to "deinterlace".

Is Crop an Add-On filter that I get from someplace else on the internet, and insert into VisualDub?

  4. joeAgain,

    1. Load up VirtualDub.
    2. Go to where you can load the filters.
    3. Look for one called Null transform.
    4. Add it.
    5. Highlight it, and choose Configure.

Now you can change the x or y axis and crop to your heart's content. Keep your changes in multiples of 8 or 16 (some encoders don't like other values when encoding).

that appears really neat, but I must be doing something wrong.

No matter how much or how little I crop, I get a popup error massage when I try to save the cropped video as and .avi....saying "Unable to start video compression error: bad image size (-201)

    Why is that?

  6. If you are using TMPGenc to encode with, why not just your the "Clip Frame" option in that. I use it a lot. Very simple and straightforward to use.

I will be doing it "for real" on my home Win98 system, but I'm practicing now on an NT system. I can't get either of those Crop(in VirtualDub) or Clip(in TMPGec) to work....

Is it NT? Do some functions not work on NT? Others work Ok, but not those(???)

Ok, I'm home now....in front of my Win98SE computer.

NOW when I use "Clip" in TMPGenc.....it won't do it and says, "Can't load P3Package.dll"

    What does that mean?

It is an mpeg file that I'm just trying to crop part of. The "Clip" function is the only thing I set and tried to do. Do I need to do something else to the mpeg file besides only the "Clip" feature to get it to work?

    What does that mean?

You might want to try the Smart Resize filter and see if it works for you

    Aguillon,

Thank you for that link. I have those Add-Ons to VirtualDub and that is a good website. But the Resizer filter he created does not do what I need. It keeps everything in the frame, but changes it's proportions.

I want to "Crop" the video. What I need is for the Crop function to work in VirtualDub, and/or the "Clip" function to work in TGMPEnc.

Does anyone else get those messages that they won't work or can't find needed files(which I have searched and ARE on my computer)?

    Why don't those functions work?

  12. Maybe you cropped 2 fields onthe top and 3 on the bottom for exampel? Vdub requries to crop the same number of fields on the top and bottom. I think i requires to crop the same number of fileds on th left and right aswell.
So for exampel cropping 10 fields on the top and 10 on the bottom will work. But cropping for exampel 9 at the top and 10 at the bottom will result in an error..

I only need it usually on one side. My test was on the bottom one time...and on the right side one time.

Can't I do that with either of those programs? Thats obsurd to have to crop the top if you crop the bottom.

My virtualdub loads about 40 filters and the cropping feature just about appears in every filter ... something is not correct ... if you can't find the cropping feature.

And the ... Smart Resize filter [1.1] ... is the one I use ... keeps the resolution of actual picture and only trims the top-bottom-sides away ... must use numbers like 2 or 4 or multiples of those numbers ... odd numbers will get a screwed up image.

And unless your using Divx 4.12 or 5 in multipass mode ... just encode a few seconds of video Divx 3.11 and then look at it ... That is what I do ... I sure don't want to encode something for 45 minutes and find my video ****-eyed ... slanted.

The cropping mode is there to be seen after hitting "OK" with the filters. Two choices ... configure and cropping. Configure is there incase you want to re-configure the filter you chose. Cropping is there next to configure.

Send me email ... m4mach10@pacbell.net ... and I will WinRar the "Filter" section and send it to ya. Unless you want to search the NET and find them your self. Rar file is 1.61 megs.

    Sincerely ... Mach10

    Thank you for that LacyWest,

I must have been doing something wrong before because now I am able to use those features (including crop), but I appreciate your offer.

I do have some questions about VirtualDub settings, but think I'll start a new thread with those.

    Maybe I'll see you "there".

    Thanks,
    Joe
