hopefully this is in the correct forum, if it's not I humbly appologise.
I've got a problem in that I know I've got various codecs installed, such as Huffy and DIVx, but I cannot use them from any of the various editing programs I've got installed.
I'm using WinXP, and using the system information tool it shows that the codecs are there and installed properly. However when using any vid capture app, or VirtualDup, I'm never given the option of using them as they dont appear in the list's of available codecs.![]()
Has anyone else got the same problem, or know of a method for rectifing the problem ?
if it's any help, I upgraded from WinME, and I'm sure the codecs worked then.
I've tried uninstalling the codecs, and then installing them again, but it makes no difference.![]()

hi m8,
is your directX out of date? i'm using directX 8.1 and have no problems.

You mentioned capturing. Have you only encountered this while capturing? If so, it's a common complaint. (That's good news.)
Each codec can only accept certain video formats. Most capture programs don't list codecs unless they're compatible with the current video format.
Try choosing a different video format from for "Format" or "Custom Format" dialog box. (Some programs don't have a "Custom Format" option.) After you choose a widely-supported format like "YUY2" or "RGB24", try choosing a compression codec and you should see more choices.
It may take some trial-and-error to find what video formats work best. Just repeat the steps--choose a another video format, then go to the compression codecs and see what choices appear. Do tests with several combinations and then check the video--some combinations may have problems like a greenish cast, flipped image, or black lines. By trying several combinations right away, you're more likely to find something satisfactory.

It doesn't seem to matter if I try to capture video, or try and convert files I've already got using VirtualDub. Pretty much every extra codec I've installed isn't recognised by any program, wheareas the original ones installed with Windows are !
I installed nimo's codec pack and none of the codecs where available, although using the system info tool in XP (run -> msinfo32) then checking Components, Multimedia, Video Codecs, shows them all being installed and their status as Ok, which I assume shoul dmean that I should be able to use them !
For instance, I've tried following a guide to convert NTSC to PAL, but I cannot output my file from VirtualDub using the Huffy codec, because VDub doesn't seem to know it's installed, even though it is.
Likewise if I try to convert files to DIVx, I've got the codec (the encoder, not just the decoder), but I can't use it.
Bleedin' annoying.
I'm hoping I can sort it without having to reinstall XP to a clean disk, rather than upgrading as I did before - I've got a feeling the answer lies there somewhere........
