I have a Avermedia AverTV Stereo.
I can capture to mpeg 1/2 using its PVR software.
I can also use other apps like PoverVCR to do the same.
But apps like virtual dub that capture in avi can't find a video capture driver/device to use.
My TV cards vid cap driver is listed in Device Manager Sound, Video and Game controllers.
But in Control Panel / Multimedia / Devices Tab there aren't any Video Capture devices listed.
I can install Win98se's WebTV and get a vid cap device in Control Panel / Multimedia / Devices Tab, but prefer not to. It installs a bunch of 3rd party stuff and another network adaptor.
Is there a 3rd party capture driver that works for AVI's that I can get somewhere?
TIA

Bump ^
I've now tried the I/O MAgic PC PVR / DR-PCTV100.
It has the same problem.
Also after installing 98se's webtv I can capture AVI, but am limited to 320x240 YUY2 or less.
RGB 24 causes lockups that causes me to have to uninstall all drivers, devices and reinstall them (including webtv) to be able to open virtualdub without locking up again.
What am I doing wrong?
Is it because I'm using the antenna input?
Would s-video or composite allow higher res's? -
In case u can use PowerVCR it means that u a using WDM drivers. Virtualdub is supporting only "old" VFW drivers.

Yah I can use powervcr to cap in mpeg 1/2 but not in AVI.
No AVI means no direct divx caps.
It also means no mpeg4 caps except at 320x240 -
i'm using win98 and had the same problem. uninstall Avermedia AverTV Stereo software, then when inserting the disk it should ask you if you want to install the software. instead of loading up the drivers in the device manager just install it and reboot but follow the instructions in the manual like it says copy files from <cd-rom drive>:\driver\win98se. when prompted, insert the ms windows98se installation cd into your cd-rom drive. click ok. in the next dialog box, type: <cd-rom drive>:\win98 then click ok. click finish. the audio, tuner and crossbar portion of the installation will continue. the installation screens will be identical to the video capture installation program. the avermedia tv series dialog box will prompt you to key-in the product key number. in the text box, type the product key then click ok. if that doesn't all work out let me know and i'll see what i can do for you. go to aver site and try the new drivers http://www.aver.com/software/index.html

Sorcerer:
Your saying you could cap AVI with virtual dub at res's greater than 320x240?
I could use Avermedias program to cap mpeg 1/2 up to 720x iirc
I tried every way you can think of to install drivers, I tried the new aver drivers and tried 3rd party bt878 drivers.
The only way I could cap AVI at all is by installing windows webtv and then only at 320x240 -
oh no i can't cap avi greater than 320x240. i don't know what else to do but maybe if you upgrade your os it would probably help. that's what i did but went back to win98 to save disk space.

If you use the VfW drivers for Win98se, shouldn't you be able to capture sizes like 640x480?
If you want to experiment, check out the WDM drivers at
http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/
They seem to support several of the AVER cards. -
I have the same card, you can cap at higher res only if you install the VFW drivers. I had to remove all references to the WDM drivers then on install use the Win98 directory drivers NOT THE Win98se driver. This works. Of course there is a tradeoff - you will not be able to use the PVR functions nor will you be able to cap at MPEG2. 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other. Unless there is another method someone can enlighten on!

thegig:
Can you describe the process of installing the vfw drivers?
Where did you find them? -
If you still have the CD. Go into the Win98 directory and the is a readme or something along those lines. I actually used http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/
and used the remove driver. Then I loaded the driver in the Win98 directory, then I reloaded my audio card driver. For some reason my system didn't get sound afterward. At that point Vdub picked up the driver, and I didn't need the WDM wrapper. If you don't have the CD you can d/l the Win98 driver from aver.com and just use it. If you don't get sound in Vdub - go into the video->source and make sure the sound is enabled.
hope this helps
