On occasion I will find a DivX DVD rip that is very high quality and I decide I want to put it on DVD-R. When I am encoding the movie to MPEG2 I usually just set the bitrate as high as it can go and still fit on the DVD-R. However, I'm wondering if there is a certain point at which incresing the bitrate will no longer improve the quality. If I am right, how do I find out this magic number?

A lot of that depends of the quality of the original Divx file. All compression ratios will lose something, just through trial-and-error you can see exactly what ratio is best for you.

Compression ratio? I just want to know how I can find out the point at which increasing the bitrate will no longer make the picture look any better.
