I have some home video stuff from a DV Tape and was wondering if its possible to make 5.1 sound. I know Im probably dreaming and that only pro equipment can do it, but it theres a way, Id like to know. Are Dolby Digital and DTS the only encodings that support 5.1? Thanks for the help.

Sorry. DTS and Dolby 5.1 can only be professionally mastered in a studio. If there is a software tool avalable that can do it I don't think it would be affordable for the 'Average Joe'.

Well... sonic foundery have an AC3 Soft Encode software that can do 5.1.
Your problem is what to put on these 6 channels ? Your DV only record stereo (2 channels).
Unless you have other sound sources of you recording located in different places around you while filming it's no use.
The only private situation I can think of would be to record a live performance of a band (mates ?) having access to the soundboard. Still then it would be a lot of work to mix the sound/instruments on each channel before encoding to AC3.

Thats right my friend we learn from errors and from others.
We are all here to help each other. Any other topics that i can help let me know i will help with no problem anything from DVD,VCD,Divx,SVCD, etc. -
Katana : the mixing you propose is "wrong".
When you open the 2 channel file a third time , the left channel becomes the front center channel and the right channel becomes bass. This will sound weird especially if their is a lot of difference between the original left and right channels.
What I'd suggest is to mix left and right channels into one , and open that file for the front center and bass.
Coming from a Camcorder , both channel shouldn't have much difference, in this case (and any other where the source is only 2 channels) I think it's better to leave it as it is (and save time) and let your Amp do the repartition and emulate the surround.

you can change the position of the channel soft encoder gives the option , i made the Spiderman DVD with my setting and sounds great in the dvd player and also i encoded another dvd with the second part of the tutorial it will take time to built the file but it fills great when you here the sorround sound floating around you from a simple 2 channel wav the question that noname ask if he can make a dvd with 5.1 dolby digital from a 2 channel wav and i made a tutorial explaining how he can make this happend he just wanted to see a dolby digital logo on in his home theather and the 5.1 sorround sound on in his dvd player. I made his dream come true you can try this if you want i just want to help i apreciate your comment and mix left and right channels into one , and open that file for the front center and bass.
is a good idea now we are talking we are fixing the tutorial thats great we are all giving some help here.the second part of the tutorial explain how to do the front, center and bass like you sugested. also i will fix the first part of the tutorial ..
thanks for the inf....... -
This isn;t really proper sorround sound yes its six distinct channels, but the problem is they are all the same, so there is no effects difference, also you cantry opening wav's from a audio cd the same way, but instead of saving the resulting 5.1 as the *.wav option and burn it as an audio cd and you now have a surround sound album.....(but it's still the same problem as above)

In my tutorial i explain very clear that is a 5.1 Dolby Digital not a 5.1 Dolby Digital Sorround the second part will explain how to make a dolby digital (sorround) and a few ideas thats all and this can be use by anyone who wants to use there imagination by palying with the 2 channel audio. 8) also i check last night soft encoder and When you open the 2 channel file a third time , the left and right channel becomes the front center channel and the bass. but each of them are stereo it will have a channel 0 and a channel1 both it means that it will not sound weird.
test this and let me know
estariol i will explain to you later how to make a 5.1 dolby digital sorround from a 2 channel is complicated but usefull.also when you encode the file it will automaticly make a delay on the sorround channels to make the file similar to true sorround try this and test the file.

There's something you all are probably forgetting. In any decent audio app like soundforge or better yet: ntrack (shareware) you can separate your original 2 channel audio into several tracks, equalize them and delaying them separately according to your home theater speakers position, then you save each track as a wav or aiff file. Afterwards, you can get this tracks into a software ac3 encoder (ac3enc, for example, that comes with Daikin's DVD Scenarist with a nice GUI) and presto! you have a "Digitally Remastered Soundtrack". Many Studios use this trick along with SRS technology to revive old mono soundtracks when they transfer old movies to DVD.
I hope this info helps you, pals.In this industry, Sadly, The future was yesterday.
