  1. I'm in a process to buy a new PC mainly use will be converting avi to mpg then burn (either as is or to vcd). Current PII 300 is too sloooooow. Is a 1.6 GHZ fast enough to do the work or do I need to go with higher? I just want to spend the min and reuse my burner and monitor. Any suggestions?

A low range Athlon XP would be best.

  3. Go to NewEgg.com and order a 1.6AGHz P4, MSI 645E MAX-C motherboard and a stick of Samsung PC-2700 DDRAM. For $297 I know have a 2.4GHz system(the fsb is overclocked to 150mhz)thats very very stable and fast.

  5. Dont go for the top of the range there is always a huge premium to be paid for the kudos of having the fastest chip. For example CCL computers sells the AMD athlon XP2100+ for £203.83 and the XP1900+ is only £115.29. I bought the XP1900+ and found I could easily overclock it to the speed of the XP2100+, I could even get it to register as an XP2200+ which is'nt even available yet.

This is proboly a ice cream induced thought so i can not take no control for the above statment. :P

  8. also u may want to go with a dual processor.....cuts your time in 1/2. but remember not all apps can use a 2 processors. tmgenc is what i do most of my divx converts in and it does. also u need win2k-xp, 95-me won't support dual proc.

  9. As indicated in this benchmark of TMPGEnc, it may improve the performance by 1/3 or 33%:
