  2. I don't know your exact situation, but this happened on me once with an AVI (divx) file I downloaded off Kazaa. After much trial and error, I finally determined what I think caused it. Kazaa didn't get the whole file in one session, it got part, then later resumed and got more, then later resumed more etc. When I tried to convert this file, it was stopping at the same point that Kazaa had stopped/resumed at, so my guess is some frames were getting corrupted when it does a resume. I verified this by re-downloading the same file in one session, and this time it converted fine. It may not happen every time, and again this may not be what happened with your source, I'm just sharing what happened to me.

  4. Download virtualdub 1.10 (tools, left of page). Open your avi file with virtualdub and select video->scan stream for errors. Once complete, still in vdub, select auid-direct stream copy, video->direct stream copy, file->save avi and output a new copy of the avi with the corrupt frames removed. You will now have an avi file that will encode properly in TmpGenc. However, if the number of bad frames was large you may experience audio sync problems in the latter part of the file.
