  3. Hey hitech,

OK, this does look good...but I have a question. The obvious advantage with this chip over what we currently have is the mpeg-4 processing capability; something that not too long ago was said to never exist. Soooo, we now have a mpeg-4 decoder chip that can be used for set-top hardware players. This is very cool, but what format would you author the mpeg-4 clip in? Vcd? Dvd? Some other format?

Veddy veddy good question, Dr Evil. Simply because I encode video/audio in MPEG-4, will it play if I encoded at 640x352? Has the Moving Pictures Experts Group decided standards re: MPEG-4 playback resolutions, bitrate, file structure on disk?

i don't use mpeg-4 at all in any of my encoding, but i was extremely impressed with the full rez, high quality video in a sample mpeg-4 i downloaded of a South Park trailer.

the trailer was 90 seconds long in a file just under 12Mbytes in size, which extrapolates to ~880Mbytes for a 2-hour movie, in full rez, high quality mode.

since there aren't any standards, maybe the mpeg-4 decoder chip will allow just about anything, like the mpeg-1 decoder in my JVC, which will play 720x480 2500 VBR MPEG-1 XVCDs i've burned.
