  2. VCDgear will change .dat to .mpeg, along with a lot of other good stuff
    I suggest using that

  3. the easiest way is to change the file ext from .dat to .mpg
    works a treat
if you dont know how to do this theres a tool called properties plus that runs from windows so you dont need to go to dos prompt to do it

  4. VCDman is right

dat is similar to mpeg but it's not exactly an mpeg - it has some extra header info -- so if you wanted to convert it to an mpeg you can use vcd gear -- just select the dat->mpeg option

if you just want to watch it then daren b is correct you can just rename it to .mpg and watch it - or to convert it to avi (using one of the guide over in the "convert" section here at vcdhelp.com) you can just treat it as an mpeg, even if you dont' rename it.

Or, if you've had some previous problems with VCDGear like me, 8) you can rename dat to mpg, then use TMPGenc's mpeg tools to demux and mux, which will produce a VCD-ready mpg. Not as quick as VCDGear, admittedly.

  6. depending on what you want to use the final result for (watching, converting or burning) - but if your looking to make a .dat a vcd ready mpeg - nero will do that "on the fly" without changing the quality of the mpeg. It will accpet .dat files to burn as compliant VCD's

we haven't heard back from Pte (the original poster) so I'm still not sure what he's looking for as a final product -- to watch, burn or convert

Well, I've got the latest VCDGear now. I will try it out in future, because it always used to be brilliant. Maybe I just had a duff copy?
