    Can anyone help on the format I should use for this file in the Subtitle Edit plugin
    I have tried
    <Word American="dumb" British="stupid" />
    as suggested by google but then I get the error message
    There are multiple root elements. Line3, position2.

  2. That error is from the XML file itself, not from your Word line.

    <Word American="dumb" British="stupid" /> is fine as an entry, but an XML document can only have one root element. If the file is just several <Word ... /> lines (or a declaration plus a bare <Word>), parsers report "multiple root elements."

    Wrap every entry in a single parent. For Subtitle Edit's American to British word list that looks like:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <Words>
    <Word American="dumb" British="stupid" />
    <Word American="color" British="colour" />
    </Words>

    Save as UTF-8 (not UTF-16) with a .xml extension, then point the plugin/dictionary path at that file again.

    Also check:
    - No second <?xml ...?> later in the file
    - No leftover HTML or markdown around the tags
    - Attribute quotes are straight " not curly quotes from a word processor

    After it loads, run a tiny test subtitle with "color"/"dumb" and confirm Tools / Change spelling / American to British picks up your custom pair. If SE still rejects the file, paste the first ~10 lines and which exact menu you load the XML from.

    Thanks a lot Fred. It works. I hope whoever else in the future has this problem can find this thread.
