  2. It really depends. If you want to capture directly to MPEG then your system is fine, you will need something like Dazzle DVC card for this.
If you want to capture to AVI then convert by software, then you need bigger hard drive. A 10GB and 4GB are pretty limited.
And what are your source video ? it's important to know.

  3. i don't see why he can't do MPEG with what he has already. MPEG-1 should be no problem at all, MPEG-2 IBP might be cutting it close though. but just try the ATI software MMC 7.1 that should've come with the card. just search the capturing forum for settings, they've been posted many many times. also make sure you get the 'fix12c.exe' utility (search for it in the forums, i know i posted that link a few times), that fixes display problems with ATI/Dazzle captures on players that use SDE flags (like pioneer). there's already a VCD setting in MMC 7.1. the quality isn't great though. for SVCD, MPEG-2, deinterlace, no vis masking, 2.28 video bitrate, VBR, 480x480 or 352x480 and set Motion estimation as high as you can w/o dropping frames. if things get real blocky, try increasing the ME range to 64x64 or 128x64 or 128x128 (but this takes more CPU the higher you go). i have no problems doing realtime MPEG-2 on an athlon 900 on a a7v133 with a UDMA66 drive. actually, a DMA33 should handle the demands of realtime, since SVCD's on the order of 20 MB/min

patrick - this ME search range has always confused me. When I play around with the ME search ranges and monitor my cpu utilization with System Monitor I get no difference for various settings. If I set it for example to 1x1 and then the max of 256x128 I get no diffenece in cpu load.

But when I lower the ME quality number from let's say 100 down to 50 the result on cpu utilization is obvious.

I wish I could figure it out.

  5. thnx for the info. Now I know what to do. Since there isn't a Radeon Capture guide anywhere to be found. There should be one since the radeon has been out for a long time already. Anyways thnx a lot.
