I wouldn't take that statement as a fact, I could argue the opposite, in that the analog playback is just a convenient feature, therefore a cost cutting has to be made using cheap circuit design. Honestly, I would use specifically a Hi8 XR camcorder for VHS-Decode and use a D8 for D8 tapes transfer only.
