I have some old Blu-ray players that are less important. The best is a Sony BDP-S790. Since it's difficult to deal with Cinavia on 3D discs, I'd like to downgrade the firmware on this.
If I'm correct I can get the software and method to downgrade here: http://www.malcolmstagg.com/bdp-s390-downgrade.html
The firmware is of Softpedia.
The thing is, I don't know what firmware version is the last version without that if any.
It does say that 'SACD-R is still broken in 0369'... is that the same issue?
Anyone have this information?

I checked the Sony BDP-S790 with Google.
It was manufactured in 2012. That is the final year settop units were not required to detect Cinavia.
I suspect by late 2012 some units did detect Cinavia.
I do not have a Sony unit so I can't tell you what the oldest firmware it can use is.
SACDs are copy protected but use a much different method than Cinavia.
Your Sony is supposed to play SACDs so you should not have any copyright problems playing.
Copying is a whole different can of worms. -
The firmware for your blu-ray got cinavia on 12/18/2014,same as my sony bdp-s380.

The information I looked up also said Cinavia was required after Feb. 2012.
My old LG settop that was manufactured in 2012 did not detect Cinavia.
But like most electronics it eventually failed & I no longer have it.
Looking at some Sony units it seems that Some units did not get Cinavia firmware until June 2012.
johns0 says his Sony did not have Cinavia detection until 12/18/2014. I'm going to choose to believe him. -
The thing is, where I see the old firmware, M13.R.0443 is the most popular from Sep 26, 2012(?), but there is a least popular M13.R.0497 from Jul 17, 2014 which should be better.
I dunno. I'm afraid to take a stab at the firmware downgrade without being sure.
Edit:
I take it back. Checking the files in the zip file, it says
M13.R.0443 is 7/26/2012
M13.R.0497 is 10/20/2013
M13.R.0510 is 11/7/2014
That's got me more confused.
Edit 2: Found a copy of the 2012 manual and it says Cinavia is included. There might not be a firmware version without it. That kind of makes sense since this model was released later than the others in the series.Last edited by doctorm; 3rd Jul 2026 at 17:15.

If you google what firmware your sony got cinavia it will give you the version,my last firmware which has cinavia ij didn't install it,my blu-ray player played all the discs that i know had cinavia with no issues.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
I believe that BD players usually play commercial DVD & BD movie discs that have Cinavia with no issues.
The problem is creating a backup copy & playing it.
Even if it is a format like .mkv . -
I forgot to say my backups with cinavia played with no issues.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
That hasn't worked for me. It's why I started this thread.
Edit: I found a discussion at stereonet.com that said Sony added it to all their firmware after April 2013. That is a good reason why the M13.R.0443 version is popular.
Edit: Modded and flashed it and Cinavia still kicked in.
I'd try M13.R.0369 if I could find a copy somewhere.Last edited by doctorm; 4th Jul 2026 at 16:08.
