  1. Hello I'm newbie, I have windows 2k sp2 and ati Tv wonder Ve card, with a nvidia video card tnt2 32mb

My problem is when i go to capture video, 320X240 with yuy2 and no audio within Virtualdub i get a lot of frame loss like 100 a min

When I had Windows ME installed virtualdub worked perfect, but the 4gb file limit made me switch to 2k

i can record perfectly with the mmc 7.1 without frame loss, in 2k

Can anyone help me please, I would love to record with virtualdub!!!!

    THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

reseting your computer before capture helps me as it clears out any processes that the cpu is running, but doesn't need to run

Even though we dont have the same ... hmmm ... everything. I'm curious about your being able to capture without any frame loss.

I use WinME ... ATI Radeon DDR 64 ... 512 megs of SDRAM and a AMD 1600 XP + overclocked to 1500 mhz.

I was making 640x480 Mpg-1 ... mpegs with bitrates up to 5kb. A 58 minute capture created a 2.3 gig mpeg. No frames being dropped.

My frame loss was 0% ... a month ago ... but something has gone haywire and I now I get 4%-19% frame drops. These are the numbers seen with ATI MMC 7.1 or 7.5 or 7.6.

CyberLink PowerVCR II ... doesn't show the amount of frame loss but it's obvious ... the capture video becomes herky-jerky as it's being recorded.

    I'm worried about my over-clocking ... I do it from the BIOS ... from 133 to 143 ... with a MSI K7T Turbo2 ... MS 6330 MOBO.

I'm worried about some device in my computer has been damaged [from overclocking] that is causing this problem ... the rest of my computer is fine. Nothing seems wrong ... just extreme frame drops.

I have tried virtualdub to record with but the image I get with PowerVCR is cleaner but it makes 400-600 MB segments to over come the windows limitations.

One thing I liked about using MMC 7.5 is the mpg created could be converted to avi with Flaskmpeg and the video would be very clear. Audio is synced too.

If I used PowerVcr and Flaskmpeg ... audio would be messed up. But not if I used VirtualDub to convert to avi.

Any suggestions ... on what to zero into for solving my frame drops problems ... that I didn't have a month ago.

I have a separate post about this problem.

    Sincerely Mach10 ... email is ... m4mach10@pacbell.net

  5. lacywest,

It could be your hard drive is filling up or you just have more things running in the background. 8)

  7. I have the same problem:

VirtualDub + ATI TV Wonder VE + Win2k/XP = frame loss,

BUT, everything ok with other capturing application, for example, Ulead
VisualStudio or, even, Microsoft's capturing sample application from
    DirectX SDK.

After all my research, I conclude following:

    FACTS:
VirtualDub can capture video only from old fashion VFW devices. TV
Wonder VE comes with new WDM device drivers only, so VirtualDub is
forced to use built-in DirectShow wrapper from WDM to VFW.
MMC captures directly from WDM device (no wrapper in the middle).

    GUESS:
The built-in WDM to VFW wrapper in Win2k/XP is badly optimized / has
    bugs / total crap / Microsoft's shame .

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, IF YOU WANT TO CAPTURE IN VIRTUALDUB:
Not too much. Try to upgrade DirectX to 8.1, if you did not upgraded yet.
May be, you will be able to find some generic VFW driver compatible with
TV Wonder, because there are VFW drivers for cards based on the same
chipset (BT878), but ATI offers only WDM drivers. May be, you will be
able to use another (not built-in) WDM to VFW wrapper, but, once again,
ATI does not offer such things, so you have to find some generic one.

    SUGGESTION:
If you really love VirtualDub, use it for editing/filtering/producing, but
    capture by WDM compatible application.

    Good luck, Mark.
