Video Downloader Roulette

I keep a bunch of these apps handy and regularly updated, because there will invariably be the possibility of differing results: videos that one or another of them can reel in, where others have failed. My most effective "Go To" option overall has remained Tubedigger. However, site protocols will change from time to time, as sites make changes, apparently in an effort to thwart the workings of these video downloader apps. So this becomes a back & forth tussle, an "arms race" on their respective parts. I just had a string of download failures with TD though . . . which could turn out to be isolated cases. Here is one of them:

(The content creator got it wrong though: Sorry, but this wasn't the greatest Western of all time ! Just arguably in the Top 25) Anyway, my Allavsoft v. 3.28 seems to have successfully downloaded it and some of the others, while not even being the most current version of the app. If so, a good illustration of what I was saying. Despite it's report of "Download Succeeded" I'll still have to check it to confirm that, as sometimes there can be defective downloads, such as with No Sound.

Well, it looks like YT is messing with us again, changing this or that in their protocols to thwart downloading. I may have to go to Reddit to find out more ? (Avoiding the risk of too easily annoying a certain program dev here.) Plenty of "Failed Download" notifications from most of the apps, which amounts to a good clue by itself. Luckily, my long term approach of keeping multiple options has at least one of those downloaders still being functional -- at least for now, and until other of the programs manage to get caught up again with the latest YT maneuvers. I don't care to sit there at the computer and stream, as a captive audience: would much rather download for viewing at my convenience, on a big screen tv. [The downloader still working for YT was not either of the two mentioned above.]

I did not try the link in the first post other than to see what it was.
Just a review of the movie.
Probably going to get a variety of opinions on the "best western" or even Eastwood's best wertern.
I like the Unforgiven but to me The Outlaw Josey Wales is better.
For his spaghetti westerns I like "Hang 'em High"
I also rate High Plains Drifter as a good western.

If I had to pick the best western of them all it would be Rio Bravo with John Wayne.

I'd still like to know and track the ongoing details on how YT continues throwing spanners into the works, to confound us. And how these changes are being circumvented, when and where they are. No trade secrets required; a rough, general coverage would be fine.

Best is to follow the issue tracker for yt-dlp on github; if YT changes something chances are that you'll see a new issue there very quickly.

Unless you happen to be a wiz with command line stuff (I'm not), that really needs a front end, and it looks like the only one provided here that is still being developed is Media Downloader. That said, there are other programs that make use of yt-dlp under the hood, maybe without stating this. They use their own shell, but then the underly8ng yt-dlp must be separately updated periodically.

I have been using a command prompt of some kind since DOS 4.
I'm good at using a command prompt.

YT-DLP Interface is 64-bit only & I use Windows 7 32-bit .

Thanks Tom. Hadn't heard of that one, but I'll check it out.
I installed the latest YT-dlp + Media Downloader front end. Waiting on the next YT download case to see how that combo fares.

After sampling what's out there, I'd have to say they are currently the pick for Free, NO Account, NO Reg., No-Strings-Attached large file xfers. GoFile is mostly O.K. also. Others have overly limiting requirements, or have fallen by the wayside, in one way or another.

Of course everyone has their favorite if the like the Western genre.

I am not saying this is the best Western ever made but I recommend "Missing" starring Tommy Lee Jones. It is gritty and violent but is quite enthralling.

IDM is 25 dollars.

Neither JDownloader nor Free Download Manager has ever worked for me. They begin a download but stall out frozen pretty early on in the process. No idea Why. I'm still on Win-10 Pro, x64.

I don't recall what the issue was with IDM (maybe something to do with privacy or security ?) which prompted me to bypass it, quite some time ago.

I like YT-DLP Interface quite a bit. You drop in your url and you can chose what quality to download at and it has batch and you can set it to download as many videos as you want at once or just one at a time. I did run across an issue on some websites with cloudfront causing the download not work. I think it worthy to explore and it is a tool worth having. Of course it is going to fail sometimes but when it does work it works well.

The more the merrier I usually say, when it comes to these things. Another one that we've overlooked in the discussion is Stacher. And I just came across this: https://nuclear.coffee/VideoGet , confirming its discontinuation. It has been another good one. Really strange though that my one year old version still works, while a bunch of the other downloaders just hit another YT brick wall. But I expect they must get updated in due course.

I would have tried YT-DLP Interface but is is only for 64-bit OS's.
TubeDigger is also payware.

I looked on my Vista partition & I have VideoGet in my Program Files.
It would be a very old version but I may have to give it a try.

cholla have you thought about getting a Windows 11 Mini PC? Perhaps you can find a cheap one with fairly decent specs.

I have TubeDigger and I don't use it all that much but it is a useful program.

I like Windows 7. Two of my computers have Windows 7 64-bit One is my laptop & the other my HTPC it is a small form Dell.
One of my desktop towers might handle Windows 10 or 11 just barely. I can do almost everything I need to with Windows 7.
It is only the software authors that are making Windows 7 obsolete.

I watched "The Missing" last night. I would rate it a good movie.
I could post a long list of Westerns I like that might be called the best. For different reasons.
For a modern Western. "The Cowboy Way" . It is not a new movie but both funny & serious.

If you have TD, it was recently updated to ver. 824. I installed it, and the downloading from YT appeared to resume . . . but, after the downloads visibly completed and the notification chime sounded, when I went to the designated destination folder those downloads were not there. I think I've seen that result before, but am at a loss to account for it. I must be missing something here, or maybe a system reboot has to take place after the update ? The developer wrote an earlier reply to me saying that TD was not the ideal tool for YT downloads. That is curious, because I had long found it to be a splendid video downloading solution, for YT as well as for numerous other sites.

YT is doing whatever it can to force users onto their paid, Premium tier. I'm not at all O.K. with that, or with their annoying commercials, which clutter and haunt their regular service. We definitely recall the YouTube that was for so long, up until those changes.
