I ripped a 2.35:1 dvd with good results except that it didnt fit my 16.9 pal widescreen tv (borders top and bottom). So in tmpenc I chose the source aspect ratio as 4:3, and video arrange method as full screen keep aspect ratio. Now this fits my tv full screen when I choose one of the user options. Can anyone let me know the settings which mean the movie would encode as 16:9 without altering the user options. Presumably it didnt fit in the first place cos 2.35:1 is not the same as 16:9? Why dont they make 2.35:1 tvs then?
thanks

They dont make 2.35:1 tvs because the screen would appear ridiculously wide and pathetically thin in comparison to what we are used to seeing. This would be a bad selling point in the view of manufacturers and retailers and therefore would not justify the development costs.
It sounds to me that you have got a good result with your encoding but if you want to try to get rid of a little bit more of those black bars you could try to encode with the "Video Arrange Method" set to "No margin (keep aspect ratio)".Spence. -
if you're using dvd2avi in your dvd ripping, dvd2avi will indicate the source aspect ratio...either 16:9 or 4:3..this is wut u indicate as your source aspect ratio in tmpgenc
as for image positioning method choose: full screen (preserve aspect ratio)
as for the VIDEO OUTPUT settings in tmpgenc, if you want to watch it on widescreen TV, the output should be 16:9 (since 16:9 widescreen TV)...however, it will appeared stretched when you're watching it on a regular 4:3 TV
