  1. Hi all.

I'm new to the forum, had two strokes over five years ago, and considering I haven't been to to this in YEARS. It may forever until I understood glossary, but hopefully you'll help.

Years ago I was an editor on Sony TV used. Now, the only things I've touched are VLC media, https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html and--you may guess it--Microsoft's older "Movie Maker." (Are there any around?)

I have am Ultra Blu-ray Disc Player and Windows 11. Add to that, a bunch of little kids' video nearly 40 years old, and quite a few of child professional video tapes.

Can you refer me to software I can handle? Also, is there a way to do the captions. I appreciate it.

(And by the way, WHY is it that people invent brilliant things and no manual? If I get a new car, there's ALWAYS a manual. What's up with that?)

    Thanks,

    30years

If by captions you mean to add subtitles to your videos then you can use Whisper.
If you have a good PC and Subtitles Edit installed then under Video you will see
    Audio to Text (Whisper)
Select it and download any option to test
There are several options to use.
I personally use Whisper AI which is a command line (cmd) application without the need for Subtitle Edit.

Because programmers like to program, not write manuals.

  5. Thanks so much! Can you be specific for the section? (And URL?) Same thing for Whisper. Appreciate it.

jagabo, that's very good! I also think it's because programmers are building things GLOBALLY and their bosses aren't so important of writing a manual! (It makes me crazy...)

    Thanks again!

Do you have latest Subtitles Edit Installed?
    What URL do you need?
Regarding Whisper on open AI here is a link. It is a really good read.
    https://github.com/openai/whisper

If you can handle command line (cmd) then I recommend installing Whisper AI.
    Otherwise use subtitle Edit.
What is you PC specifications? If you have a good CPU and GPU then you will get good and accurate results.
BTW whisper works on the audio but it handles the video as well.
What I mean by this is that if you want someone to create subtitles for you, then you can just send him only the audio if you prefer (privacy concerns?)

  7. The section that I was referring to is: Authoring (Blue-ray)

But..If you are new at this then I would start with simple DVD creation.

Some of us have decided that that is old tech and it's getting harder to find reliable DVD blanks.

I just create video files and store them on my hard drive. (and backups)

  8. @30years - can you clarify exactly what you are asking for? Your original post is very confusing. Are you looking for a video editor, or a way to produce Blurays from video files, or a way to produce DVDs from video files?

And you want a way to generate subtitles (captions), is that correct?

It's a lot easier for us to help you if we can actually understand what your desired end result is.
