need help starting out.

i've looked at all the available software and have a working knowledge of the different formats (ever so slight as it is), could anybody help me with advice on what is need, software-wise, as a complete starter kit with most of the bells and whistles to make back up and duplicates of both dvds and vcds? is there any freeware that is recommended as a good place to start? it seems as if there is a ton of different software and i'm just looking to do basic tasks. thank you.
