  1. Hello,

I want to capture some of my old vhs I captured some good lossless avis back in the past if I rememver correct just need some feedback on what to choose.

This is my current setup :
Blaupunkt Rtv 966 > svhs cable > Panasonic DMR-Eh575 > svhs Cable > Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle > Windows 11 Machine using Virtual dub 1.9.11

    First Question :
I want to capture standard pal vhs tapes which video output would be the best to select in my Blackmagic intensity software?

    Second question :
I can't install huffyuv for the life of me tried everything with no luck so far.
I read that either lagarith or utvideo would be equal if not supperior to huffyuv using modern machines.
Which codec would you suggest to use for my project?
    If utvideo which one?

    Third question :
If I remember correct I had some filter packages for vdub installed to improve the picture and audio quality.
Is this a good idea if yes what kind of filters would you suggest?

Yes, it is hard. I have written a guide here. It does require a bit of fiddling about. That might get you there.

That said, UTVideo is fine for lossless capture; use the ULY2 version:

There are some good video filters for VDub; unfortunately some are only in 32bit. Ones I like and use are the Camcorder Colour Denoiser (CCD) and Colormill (these are both 32bit and 64bit). I have notes and links to them here.

It depends a lot on what you're doing with your video after capture and how far you want to go on the improvement road. If you are using a good video editor, you're probably better off doing your colour adjustments in it. Deinterlacing can be done in VDub, but AVISynth+QTGMC gives a better result but you'd better have plenty of hair because you'll be tearing a fair amount of it out getting those set up.

    Can't help with the Shuttle.

Got my setup working fine now I think.
I will fiddle around with the filters as I play around I guess.
Would it make sense to add more filters for tapes with worse quality?

    Excellent.

Filters use depends on the particular tape and what you have done to the video before VDub and what you are going to do to it afterward, say in an NLE.

I see elsewhere you mention AVISynth; are you familiar with it, or prepared to learn about it? It has a first-class deinterlacing filter/plugin (QTGMC) and also very good noise reduction filters eg TemoralDegrain.

Probably best if you tell us your workflow, software-wise eg are you using an NLE? Then we can advise on how to use what's available to get the best out of your captures.

No I actually have some partners in crime for this project thanks god
I own the tapes and the capture hardware and they got the know how on how to use avisynth and such.
I "just" need to capture the tapes in a good lossless avi quality

What do you mean have done before vdub what things can be done before?

Arr, OK, that makes it easy.

Capture lossless with [whatever program suits your fancy, VDub, Amarec...] in HUFF, UTVideo or other desired lossless codec
Set up AVISynth script to process as needed eg Deinterlace, noise reduction, levels adjustments
Open AVISynth script in VDub, further process as needed eg CCD, Colormill
Export to a format which will open in PPro.

What do you mean have done before vdub what things can be done before?
"Before VDub" I meant the AVISynth script.

    AVIsynth is used in vdub?
I thought it would be used afterwards on the losless avi?

After you have your capture, you set up an AVISynth script with the required filter/plugins, then you open the script (which is in the form of a text file eg "capture.avs") in VDub. VDub will then display your capture with the AVISynth filters applied to it.

Have a read of my spiel on AVISynth here.
