Making the mistake of fooling around with my MPC-HC settings for once in a blue moon I discovered the following:
Whenever there is dual audio (e.g. a commentary track) if the second track is AC3 (i.e. it never happens on AAC) the audio playback becomes corrupted and disappears. This happens exclusively when the LAV filters are in use. If I set my external ffdshow audio filter to 'preferred' both tracks play back without a problem. Is this an issue with a settings, the LAV splitter or what? Thanks for any assistance.

Can you provide a file that shows this problem?

  3. I agree with davexnet.post a sample of the problem video.

Myself I do not have ffdshow installed my main OS & I do not link MPC-HC to it on my old Vista partition.
In Internal filters I only have CDDA (Audio CD) checked.
The Audio Switcher & Audio Renderer are also unchecked.
This is what my External filters looks like.
All set to prefer except the midi filter:

I'm sure I have a DVD I can test with.
Whether it will work the same as yours' IDK.
I so seldom listen to a commentary track I do not know if they work like your video with LAV filters.

I found an mkv with 6 audio channels. You can open your source in graphstudio to confirm LAV is working properly

Thanks Dave and Cholla. I honestly don't think a sample video would reveal anything. It's got to be in the player configuration. My setup is a classic mish-mash of add-ons over the years that probably should have given me conflicts already but haven't. I realize that ffdshow today is merely deprecated redundancy with LAV in most cases but it's worked so... Your snapshots might have given some clues. I DON'T have LAV filters showing in the loaded external filter box. Nor do they exist in the behind the scene list with all filters in my computer. Yet the filters are in the LAV folder of MPC-HC. Could one or more be corrupted or were they just never truly installed? Might this be an anomaly (still a mystery to me) with the business of the MPC-HC internal LAV filters vs the external ones. Perhaps with two audio files loaded you need a second instance of a filter to play the extra source? But why ac3 and not aac or mp3. I've always assumed the player was using their home-grown variety in any case. Yeah, I'll try and check it out with graphedit and maybe just re-install LAV completely or upgrade MPC-HC. Like I said it's not a killer, but any more observations on this would be welcome.

  6. I have LAV filters installed in Program Files & in the MPC-HC folder in Program Files.
The reason for a sample video is to see if it will play correctly on MPC-HC in my OS.
If it does then it is probably your settings.
If you are using an older OS like I am. Windows 7 the MPC-HC version makes a difference.

Per davexnet's instructions tested the LAV filters with graphedit but I used the newer version graphstudionext-0.7.3.2.
I did this strait from a DVD disc.Once you load your file :
Use the right click\Stream selection\then the 2 channel audio track.
    The one I selected is .AC3 .
Then Play. If it plays then the LAV filters are working.
I also have my LAV filters to show in the system tray when they are used.

The default of mpc-hc is to use it's internal filters. If you have it set that way, using GraphEdit doesn't help in the problem solving.
It can be checked/modified at view / options /internal filters.

If you'd like to try resetting everything back to default,
    view /options/misc/reset
