  1. Hey there!

I am looking for a video software allowing me to load VIDEO_TS folders from a DVD. I must be able to select the subtitles tracks from the DVD so that I can embed the subtitles to the recorded video clip.

I tried with VLC but there is no way to embed the subtitles to the recorded file.

    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    Use DVD Decrypter
    Use MKVToolNix

  3. I would start with converting the VIDEO-TS folder to a .MKV with MakeMKV.
Then read this topic from post @7 on down except for the post by naoto89.
naoto89 wanted to do the conversion he wanted with a batch script & that would not work with my or ProWo's suggestions.
I would give the ProWo Clever method a try first.

    @ Subtitles,
Depending on the DVD age & the encryption used(if any) DVD Decrypter may or may not rip the DVD.
DVDClip wants embedded (hardcoded) subtitles MKVToolNix can not create those.
MKVToolNix can rip some subtitles depending on the format. So it might be able to rip the subtitle files.

  4. Thanks for your answers. I plan to make hundreds of clips so I aim at a software with a fast process. So far best option seems to use a screen capture software. Just tried Camtasia, does the job but still needs a bit of handling. I understand having the source of the videos as VIDEO_TS folders is a problem, using mkv, avi or mpeg files would mean plenty of softwares to choose between.

  6. @ Alwyn,
Unless I missed it your method does not address the hardcoded subtitles the OP wanted in the first post.

    @DVDClip,
What is the source of you subtitles you plan to use?
If the source is the .vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder then they are probably the wrong format.
You will likely need to convert them to .srt or .ass . This will require subtitle software.

    @Cholla
I don't see where the OP in his original post mentions his DVD has hardcoded subtitles.
Embedded doesn't necessarily means hardcoded, as far as I know.
His DVD disk can be ripped by DVD Decrypter without any problems and any soft coded subtitles if they are available. It is an old app but works fine.
MKVToolNix can then create a video file and add to it the soft coded subtitles if they are available on the DVD.
The OP is kindly requested to clarify his intentions in more details.

    You are correct.

I always though they were the same & why I interpreted embedded as hardcoded.
If this is incorrect I would like to know. Searching the Internet I was still confused on the correct answer.

I still have DVD Decrypter in my "toolbox".
Since I also have AnyDVD HD & DVDFab Passkey (Payware version) I usually use one of those.
I do use others like MakeMKV

    I also use MKVToolNix.
For ripping the subtitles from the MakeMKV rip I used it.
On a side note when I loaded the same DVD rip that has soft subtitles into MKVToolNix the VIDEO_TS .VOB files it does not show the subtitles.
This is why I used the MakeMKV rip from the same DVD.

I was also able to do all of this with Clever but I did not like the subtitle font it used.
The subtitles from the MakeMKV rip I extracted with MKVToolNix looked OK.
I then used Clever to create the final .MKV with hardcoded subtitles.

    I agree.
For me I got some practice adding hard coded subtitles to a video.
Something I usually do not do. So it wasn't a waste of time.
