  1. Looking for a template or details on how to achieve a specific effect shown in the opening sequence of the early 70s cop show. Planning a spoof of my local town copying this effect and style of the 1min intro to the TV show.

I've messed with Premiere and AE back in the day, but was hoping someone has already done or figured out this effect or similar.

  2. Something like the attached? I did this in Kdenlive -- this may work the same for other editors, but in kdenlive you can make your own custom "wipe" files (.pgm extension, "Portable GrayMap") and it's one of those things that's not too difficult to work out once you've done it, but man, I'm trying to think how to explain this if you've never done something like this before. But quick version -- you copy (easiest) or create (a bit more difficult) .pgm file that contains the wipe method you want to use (like rectangular strips sliding across the screen) and then you can edit that in your favorite image editor, and tilt the wipe, or "squeeze" the wipe so it only affects a certain part of the screen, and ... well, this is one of those things where a short video tutorial would be a heck of a lot easier than trying to explain how to do this using words, so if this sample is close enough to what you're trying to do, let me know and we can go from there.

EDIT: I did this sample video in about ten minutes in Kdenlive, I say that not to brag but just to note this was done on very short notice, it's a bit rough but wanted a quick demo of the possibilities, you can tweak this method to make really nice, clean transitions and overlays.

  3. I wrote an article about doing this many years ago but it would take forever to find it.
Basically you make a static image with the level of switch from video A to video B represented by shades of gray. The wipe follows the shade from dark to light (or light to dark to reverse the effect) over the duration you set the wipe to last.

For example if your image was a circle, dark in the center and getting lighter towards its circumference, the wipe would switch video sources as though it was a circular aperture gradually growing in size.

For the effect in the video, there is a uniform background with diagonal shaded pattern so the source switches as diagonal stripes.
