Hi All,
It's bad. But I still have all my tapes in the drybox. Need to spend time transferring to digital media again.
So, which is better SSD or HDD? From what I read on the internet, SSD is better. All my video files can fit into 1TB.
One 1TB NVME SSD and an USB enclosure should enough. Any idea ?
Thank you.

Sorry to hear that.
The only HDD failure I had was gradual and I was able to get the data off it (used a specialised data recovery service). The only SSD failure I had was instant. Dead. It reset itself. I would never have my "backups" on an SSD.
And, of course, have at least 2 copies (on different types/makes of drive) of your digital files. That will prevent the position you are now find yourself in. -
There's no.. "better": they have different uses and each type has pros and cons.
SSD are - a lot - faster and more "resistant" (not having mechanical parts, it's only electronics).. but if you write/delete/rewrite a lot on your drive it may be a problem (SSDs have a fixed number of writing cycles.. )
Mechanical hard drives (there are different types.. but basically all work the same way) are a lot more "fragile" than SSD and ways SLOOOWER .. but they don't have fixed writing cycles and they can last decades, especially if you use a good (stable) power supply on your pc (that is often the most overlooked part of the system)
PS: As Alwyn pointed out.. SSD aren't meant for backups .. they're very fast drives to use with OSes and software/games. -
i have 3 nas boxes with redundant backup for all my files. can't lose anything.

Thanks for all the comments.
I hope my Sony camcorder still works. Another few days of video capturing.

Amazon is selling this Dual Bay Raid SSD Enclosure.
It supports the following modes
1. RAID 0
2. RAID 1
3. JBOD (independent drive usage)
It can double up as a cloner.
Only advantage that I can think of is space and weight over HDD.
Google AI says SSD is more reliable than HDD.
Anyone using this ? -
I'd recommend two independent/separate backup copies. If you house burns down or gets ransacked, you'll only potentially lose one backup copy.

Jokes aside.
I will go with the blu-ray M-disc. Will try the 25GB disc first and maybe the 100GB later. -
SSD for capturing, HDD for long term storage.

I managed to put the Asus BW-16D1HT and USB C enclosure.

My experience of burning blu-ray disc(M-disc Verbatim M-disc 50GB) with ImgBurn.
1. First disc - I accidentally bump into the drive when it was at 10% burn. The disc failed.
2. Second disc - Burn at max speed and at max capacity 49+GB of data. Failed at verification.
3. Third disc - Set burn speed at 4X and capacity at 36GB. Pass verification. -
For backup this can be best solution because it will prevent most common drive failure which is mechanical. It mirror each drive and monitors them, if one fails you can pop in new drive to rebuild the array. It can also provide increase in performance for read speeds.
Not true backup though because if something were to change the data it's changed on both drives. e.g. you are writing your life story and accidentally delete half the pages. Once saved you have two perfect copies with missing pages. Also since it's same device it would also be prone to both failing for some catastrophic event. -
If your drive is failing, you may give it a chance with Minitool Data Recovery on Mac. My WDPassort is failing, too. On Windows it shows nothing. On Mac with Minitool, I can still copy most of the data. Some files fail, but 90% of the data is available. On Windows even with Minitool it is impossible. Doesn't work.
