I own a seldom-used but still fully operational Magnavox MDV410 DVD player. I also have the original remote, and it too is fully operational.
This model has both RCA composite and S-Video outputs, as well as RCA Left-Right audio outputs and a digital audio coax output.
The owner's manual does not offer much of anything as far as detailed video specs.
I know that S-Video supposedly does not improve too much on video resolution vs. RCA-composite. Even so, if anyone can provide in simplest terms what may be the best resolution I can expect from the MDV410's S-video output, I would appreciate it.

Do you mean if you were to do an analog > digital capure of a VHS tape?
Normally it would be captured at 720x480 NTSC Standard Definition -

Yes. NTSC DVD "resolution" is 720x480 pixels which is independent of the player. The resolution in terms of picture details does not impove with upscaling to a higher frame size, because upscaling cannnot add picture details which do not exist in the 720x480 DVD source.
(S-Video or Composite are bandwidth limited analog signals which have no pixels.)Last edited by Sharc; 10th Nov 2025 at 16:52.

Why bother capturing from a DVD player when you can rip the disc and get a perfect copy of what's on it?
And if you do have to capture from the player s-video will get you a much better picture than composite. Better resolution (assuming the DVD has the resolution, a DVD made from a VHS tape won't have great horizontal resolution, and a DVD recorded at half D1 or quarter D1 also has lesser resolution) and no dot-crawl or rainbow artifacts.Last edited by jagabo; 12th Nov 2025 at 00:03.
