ok ive read about all i can read on this subject, and still cant get anything to work. i have used tmpgenc to convert it to a working vcd file, but when i go to burn it onto a cdr, using nero on all the right setting from this site(i even used vcdeasy to try and get that one to work... but only coasters) it says on this site that if it is not a valid vcd file that nero will kick it out. well, i have yet to see nero kick one of my files out yet. so i assume that they are all encoded properly. i do have a dvd player that will play vcds, but the way im checking them is by putting them into my cdrom and exploring the disk to see how large it is. all i am getting onto the disk(although when you look at it, it looks like alot of space has been taken up.) is 2.15 mb. and the data is in 3 different folders. I really dont know what else to do. any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, the burner i use is a philips cdd4801 cd-r/rw with c1.3 firmware. thanks in advance for any help!!

Have you actually tried playing it in your dvd player. Look in the Mpegav folder on the disc. There you should see the DAT file which is your video stream.

i agree with the above post, if you click on a folder it only gives the space used by the folder, try going into the mpgav or whater and seing whats in there , it should be something like avesq001.dat or similar(ive been down the pub)this is the main file for selecting to playback a svcd in a vcd playa

ok i will try looking on the disk in that folder for the file you mentioned. as for your first question, yes i have tried to play it in my dvd player, and it did not work. this is the model i have....sony single disk dvd player , model number DVP-NS300. it says that it will play vcds, but in the instruction manual, it lists the type of disks that it will not play, and cdr's are one of them that it wont play. is there a way of finding out if the disk copied correctly, by testing it on my pc? also, if it is in fact my dvd that wont play it, what is the cheapest one out there that will play a homemade vcd disk? thanks agian

you can test a vcd on your pc with a software dvd player like power dvd... and you dont need a dvd rom to play it either, vcds, and svcds for that matter, will play in any cd-rom drive...

jaysinn, Sony are fussy when it comes to playing cd-r's, I should know I own one, through trial and testing I found two brands that my player(DVP 535) will play, they are Princo(soon to be out of business thanks to phillips) and Pyrod. The disks need to have silver/blue die layering otherwise your wasting your time. Track these down and try again.
What does your dvd display tell you when you insert the disk? if it says "no disk" then the above is the case.
To answer your other question testing the disk to see if it works, if you have windows media player start it up and then open file location browse to your cdrom drive then into the Mpegav folder and select the avesq001.dat file. Media player should play this and confirm that the burn was succesful.
By the way are you making the correct format mpg file for vcd or svcd, most important.
Hope its helped

You could try using cdrw.
Check on the dvd player compatability list to see if your player supports cdrw.

i have tried burning the file onto a cdr/w , but the disk is made by fuji. so i dont know if that is compatible or not. but if you have a list of players that you know of that will play homemade vcds, that would be great. and one more thing, where can i find these cdr's that you guys know will work with sony dvd players? i have another question to ask, but i will wait till later, cause it is a real doozy!!lol

by the way, the message i get when i put the cd into my dvd player, is no disk inserted. also, i got powerdvd, and it DID in fact play the disk that i had made. i also went into the setup and disallowed playing of any media files exept for vcd, dvd and some other video setup. but those were the only three allowed, and it played my disk. so i guess all those fifty or so coasters i made last week were really good after all....lol

The dvd player compatability list is on this site

well, i guess it is just my dvd player , because i took the same disk that i was trying to get to play in my dvd player over to a friends house and it played perfectly on an imitation cdr, and on a fujifilm cdr/w. he tried them on his player and his parents, and it worked on both. he has a yamaha s-5350, and his parents have a 3 disk ge, but i forgot the model number. and here i have always loved using sony products...lol . i really dont know what to do now. in the compatibility list, it says that a fujifilm 650mb cdrw will work in it just fine, but that is what i used and it only worked at friends house. now im stuck again i guess.
