  1. I remember eons ago using Monkey Audio to convert APE files to MP3, but for the life of me I can't figure out how I did it! There doesn't seem to be any instructions anywhere that I can google showing how to set up LAME as an external encoder for the MAC front end. Does anyone know how to do it with MAC 3.99 or higher? Thx!

Found a couple old links that might help, I guess depending on what version of MAC / the frontend you're using:

Seems you just put the lame.exe in the Monkey's Audio program folder's 'External' subfolder and might have to edit/create a LAME.apx similar to the others in there - except with the lame commands you want to use. Then it'll show up as one of the external encoder options.

  3. Thx. I found that thread as well. Tried it but didn't have much success, so I've decided to use EAC as it supports both APE and MP3 compression.

I don't usually use ape but out of curiosity I downloaded the latest version of MAC and gave this a try. I put lame.exe in C:\Program Files\Monkey's Audio x64\External and copied the text content of FLAC.apx and pasted it into a new txt file, then edited a few things substituting lame commands, etc. in place of flac. Saved the txt file and renamed it LAME.apx. Opened MAC and changed the mode to convert and the compression to external and chose lame (it shows up as an option after doing the stuff ^^above^^) and one of the options I put in the LAME.apx. Conversion works but the metadata isn't copied/transferred. Oh well . BTW, I tried to attach the LAME.apx to this post, renamed as a txt file.

Welcome . It's too bad none of the tag data gets transferred over
I usually use foobar or cuetools for conversion, works better.
