i read online that you could potentially force a lot of analog capture cards to capture more of the vertical picture with something like graphedit/graphstudionext. so like the blackmagic cards which capture 486 lines instead of 480. i have a gv-usb2, has anyone had any luck taking a crack at this?

There is not "more" of a vertical picture if you capture x486.

Kinda depends on the type of tape you're capturing I think. The problem with 480 line captures is that you don't get to choose *which* 480 lines are captured. The very top line is a "half line" which is kind of annoying and usually something I'd either mask or not use, but on first generation tapes, it is often possible to get rid of the head switching noise altogether depending on the playback machine.
As far as being able to extend the capturable area, I'm not sure if that'd be possible without customizing the driver, or it could be something that is hardware locked.
