  1. Hi everyone, I’m new here.

I’ve got a Canopus ADVC-100 unit that’s being detected, but it won’t show any preview from the VHS player. All the switches are off except for No. 1 (set to PAL for Australia). No matter how I change the switch settings, nothing comes up in the preview - just a blue screen with 'playing' & 'camera connected'.

I’ve tried both FireWire ports (front and back) on my PowerMac G4 MDD, but mainly use the front one. My friend’s ADVC-110 works flawlessly on the same setup, so I know the Mac and the FireWire ports are fine.

Could this be a case of failing or leaky capacitors in the ADVC-100? Has anyone here come across the same issue and managed to fix it by recapping the board?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  2. Most likely it is the SMT capacitors. Both of my ADVC-110's stopped working and now work fine after recap.

Canopus ADVC boxes are 1990s tech (Pentium III specs suggested, Pentium II minimum), with many quality-lowering issues. These weren't made to last 25 years, and should have been replaced with better cards 20 years ago. I would take this as an opportunity to upgrade to 2000s-2010s quality lossless cards.
