  1. Background story:
I noticed that audio files in programs like Adobe Audition and Vegas Pro are louder than when playing them back in PotPlayer. But then I tested it in Windows Media Player and it turned out it was PotPlayer that somehow keeps the volume low, while every other application plays back audio normally.

The most common culprit of volume issues in PotPlayer appears to be the Normalize (Auto Volume Control) option. But in my case it is unchecked.
I made sure that all my audio settings are set to recommended and default. I also don't have the Equalizer enabled. I listen with headphones.

Or perhaps PotPlayer is normally like this when compared to other audio players?

  2. Found a solution while writing the above post.

Turns out the recommended settings were the problem. Namely, the Speakers setting was set to "2.0 Stereo (Recommended)". I've changed it to "Same as input" and now the audio is normal. A quick way to get to that menu from the player window is to click that decimal number in the bottom-left corner, to the right of the format name.
