  2. MakeMKV is free while in beta, the current free beta key is:
(valid until the end of July 2025)

Or get the free beta key from https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053.

  6. I just wait until MakeMKV warns that the key is too old.
Then I download & install the latest version.
    Which I need to do.
I will post if it does not work.

  9. You can try alternatives like: Clever FFmpeg-GUI

"Implemented DVD movie rip (unprotected DVD's only):
Locate the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD and look at the Video Titleset VOB files (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB is the first part of the Video Title 1).
Point to the desired Video Title Set, first part (VTS_01_1.VOB for Video Title 1) and the entire Title (Movie) 01 will be ripped and imported,
if you answer YES to the question if you want to rip the whole movie. If you answer NO, only the selected part is read and imported."

@VideoAI, stop trolling. The licence expired last month. MakeMKV doesn't currently run, as you would have found if you had bothered to try it.

Not available right now. I've been waiting for almost a week.

People are trying to buy it after the new beta key hasn't been posted and they aren't receiving their key and PayProGlobal have stopped accepting payments now.

It would really suck if MakeMKV isn't updated anymore. Such a useful program.

Use DVD Decrypter if you can find the installation file.

I very rarely need to rip a DVD. Make MKV does two great jobs, ripping a Blu-ray to an MKV file, or rip the whole disc.

I just hope they haven't decided to stop making it.

I also rarely RIP a DVD but when I installed the latest MakeMKV, I discovered that it doesn't work anymore so I used DVD Decrypter as a good alternative. Luckily for me I don't have any Blu RAY discs that I need to RIP.
I share your hope that MakeMKV hasn't stopped being developed.

There's no link on the front page, and the other day I found the page on the website with the link to buy it (which now I can't, I don't remember how I found it the other day), and when I found it and tried, I got this:

I would be happy to pay the $50 even if they don't develop it anymore and it only works on Blu-rays up to a certain date, because it still works for tons of Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays. It's very useful for so many things. I study color grading, and it allows me to rip any Blu-ray I want to MKV and then throw it in DaVinci Resolve and do a side by side comparison to try to match the color grading from my favorite movies.

Another use is to fix transfers of old SD footage to Blu-ray that were not put much effort into. There are great old concerts from the 80's in SD that on a modern 4K TV set look like crap, but they look decent on old CRT TV sets. Part of that is because of the pattern that you see from the CRT scan lines. Well, you can rip that Blu-ray, throw it in Resolve, then put a graphic with the scan lines on top, and you'll have something that looks way better, because it kind of emulates the look of an old CRT TV set. Obviously it's not going to give it more detail. What that does is to hide the worst visual artifacts of SD video when watched on an LCD screen.

But I can see how the author doesn't see the appeal in it anymore, because unfortunately most people don't give a damn about Blu-rays. Most people are happy with the mediocre streaming quality, so Blu-ray is going to be extinct soon.

  21. use mkvtoolnix for dvd
Add the first vob then append others vob.

On destination TAB you can load IFO file from dvd on the right of the panel
Now you can tag, split or mux (multiplex) vob as makemkv do for free.

I'm not sure if this was a reply to me or to the whole thread. If it was for me, like I said, I hardly ever need to rip DVDs. I own hundreds of Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays, and less than 50 DVDs. To me it's a terrible format.

Assuming MakeMKV is not available to buy, there are other alternatives to rip DVD and Blu Rays.
DVDFAB is too expensive even with their occasional discounts.
I have PavTube Video Converter Ultimate that I bought ages ago and ripped with it Game of throne Blu Ray discs.
It is still available to buy costs $65 but I suggest to contact them and ask for a discount coupon. You might get lucky or find valid discount coupons searching the internet.

There are other Blu Ray rip software but I have tried only PavTube and I was happy with it then.

Thanks for the tip, but I hate DVDFab. It's bloated software with constant push to buy it if you use the free ripper (if that's still available anyway).

As for PavTube, I didn't know it, but it looks like DVDFab, meaning bloated software that installs a lot of things in the OS. I'm hoping we will have good news about MakeMKV soon.

If you manually set your computer date to a date in July, the posted key will work. From experience, you can't change the date back to automatic/the current date while using MakeMKV or the discs won't rip properly. Remember to reset the date when you're done using MakeMKV, and you'll likely want to avoid using your computer for much else while the date is set back since you can run into problems with many sites or programs if the date isn't correct.

Ah heck I hope it doesn't go away. Grant it I'm a licenced user, but this is the only viable Linux solution for me.
if all else fails read the manual
