someone i know just bought a JVC HR-8000U from ebay. It supposedly has a TBC, but he cannot find any button to turn it on. Does anyone know anything about this model? Would one of the later JVC HR units be a better option to buy?

  2. I haven't read the manual, but I don't think it does. It's a pretty old unit (released around 1988) which is about 8-10 years before JVCs could potentially have TBCs, so I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that there is no TBC.

JVC was pretty confusing on their model numbering scheme, so I could see why one might think it'd have a TBC just based on the model number that falls between the 7x00 and 9x00 which can sometimes have TBCs. Just as an example, the 3800, 4800, 7800, and 9800 were all probably released in 2000 or so. The latest model with a TBC in that line (HR-S9911U) has the manual dated 2002. For reference, the 7500U's manual is dated 1998.

Wouldn't be surprised if someone threw "TBC" into the auction title to get more hits without really knowing what that is.

I've seen one YouTuber who likes the 8000U as a daily driver, so they may have influenced some to seek out the 8000U specifically.

What might be a more interesting question is what was the first USA model of JVC to have a line TBC, I always assumed it was the 7500/9500.

That is an ancient not-suggested VCR, with no line TBC.
