I was using DVD Shrink for a while to rip my DVD's, but i recently encountered a problem. I am wondering if some DVD's have advanced rip protection, and if it's better to use something like Handbrake, or MakeMKV?

I own a DVD, and ripped it using DVD Shrink. When playing the finished product (The DVD files) using VLC player, there were a ton of skips, and it would replay a part of the DVD over and over. When i just PLAYED the DVD in the laptop's DVD drive, (yes, it's an OLD laptop) while using VLC video player, it played fine, with no skips at all, no replays of parts, no problems. I am wondering if there was some sort of technology protecting the DVD from being copied by DVD Shrink.

How exactly? Have you joined up the VOBs and converted to MPEG?

I was under the impression that Handbrake will not decrypt DVDs unless some modifications are done to it. MakeMKV will almost certainly decrypt it satisfactorily.

  3. DVDShrink is old by today's standards and cannot bypass newer protection schemes. Many are liking MakeMKV for the newer protections used on DVD's and BluRays. It is said to be free while in Beta.
However using an old laptop DVD drive may be part of the problem, also. Several makes and models of the style used in old laptops are known to be not as user-friendly for ripping DVD's.
There are many threads to give you an insight on what to do ETC. Too much to go into here. Use the search feature to find out more.

  4. @ Alwyn,
You need to put this in your Program files\Handbrake folder.

Download this file if your running a 64bit System to bypass copy protection
    64-bit

Download this file if your running a 32bit System to bypass copy protection
    32-bit

There is a newer version of the libdvdcss-2.dll here on the videohelp site:
It did not work with my OS for ripping a DVD with Handbrake.
It may work on a newer OS

    @ snafoo ,
It could be copy protection. DVDShrink can remove copy protection from some older DVDs.
I usually recommend DVDFab Passkey it becomes DVDFab Passkey Lite after the trial.
There is also XReveal but it has not worked as good as I would like for me.

    Then I agree with OldMan64.
It may be the laptop optical drive you are using to rip the DVD.
If this laptop is all you have then I recommend adding a half-height optical drive in an external enclosure.

@Cholla, thanks for that, but will Handbrake smart-copy the DVD files into either MPEG or VOB? DVDShrink and MakeMKV will.

    No.
It will only create a .mp4 or .mkv file.
With the added libdvdcss-2.dll it does decrypt a commercial DVD.
At least the couple I tested it with.
Handbrake is not my "GoTo" software for doing a commercial DVD rip.

I have both AnyDVD HD with CloneDVD & DVDFab DVD Copy & DVDFab Passkey all lifetime licensed.
AnyDVD HD or DVDFab Passkey will also rip to DVD9 by themselves but do not compress.
For most DVDs they also work with DVDShrink.
DVDFab Passkey also works as Passkey Lite most of the time.
Since AnyDVD HD & DVDFab Passkey do not work well when installed on the same OS.
I have to test DVDFab Passkey Lite on a different partition with it's own OS.

My testing of XReveal has shown it works on some DVDs but not all DVDs.
It is freeware so worth having but may not decrypt all DVDS correctly.
