  1. Hello,

I'm using a Canon XM2 camcorder to transfer my miniDV tapes via FireWire.
Things worked out quite easily; I used WinDV, connected my camcorder, hit capture and the different segments got saved onto my Windows PC.
It was almost too good to be true, because when I was checking the recordings, I noticed that some segments have no audio.
The audio plays on the camcorder, so it must be related to WinDV.

I read something that WinDV has problems with mixed audio frequencies; could this be the reason?

I came across another tool, "Capture Flux. It looks like there the audio is recorded correctly, but here the whole tape is one big file.

Any recommendations on how I can transfer the tape 1:1 (A/V) to my PC and split the tape automatically in segments (preferred with date/time naming)?

    Thanks.

Odd. Try Scenalyzer. It's another DV-only transferer. My guide here.

  3. It's probably a type 1 vs. type 2 DV AVI issue. Type 1 has the video and audio streams saved within the AVI file marked as a single video stream. Type 2 has the audio as a second stream within the AVI file marked as an audio stream. Some software works with one type, some with the other. There are programs that convert between the two type but I forget what they're called.

You can set WinDV to create/transfer/capture Type 2 AVIs.

dv avi can be recorded at 48k htz 2 channel or 32k htz 4 channel. if the tape switches back and forth between the 2 types windv might not.

  6. Okay, all 32 kHz files don't play the audio correct, even when the audio track is present:

    I tried to convert the audio to 48 kHz "ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 output.avi", but didn't change anything.

The tape was copied with as Type 2 with WinDV.

Is there any further conversion needed, or the files are simply damaged as audio duration shows 440 ms?

  7. DVDate can convert back and forth between type 1 and type 2 DV AVI.

    https://www.videohelp.com/software/DVdate

Also note that MediaInfo shows the audio data for both type 1 and type 2 but for type 1 it shows the audio is muxed in the video stream:

I remember having that kind of issues too in the past when I had recorded some segments in 32kHz when using Digital8.
I used Scenalyzer live and started the capture in the middle of a 32kHz segment, then rewinding/recapturing the full segment.
Or set your camera in 32kHz audio mode so the camera/Scenalyzer initializes in 32kHz mode.
You have to play around with Scenalyzer or other capture tool a bit.

iirc you need to do the same with windv. go to the segment with 32khz and start playing it on cam, pause, then start windv to transfer it.

  10. Alright, I tested now WinDV, dvgrab, and Scenalyzer.

    WinDV:
The segments got split correctly according to the timestamps, audio was missing for 32 kHz segments.

    dvgrab:
    Command:
    Code:
dvgrab --rewind --autosplit --timestamp --size 0 --showstatus dv-
Most of the segments were split correctly, but some were combined even when the timestamp was clearly different, some smaller segments haven't been copied at all, 32 kHz audio segments got converted to 48 kHz, and the audio worked.

    Scenalyzer:
The segments got split correctly according to the timestamps, no segments were missing, 32 kHz audio segments got converted to 48 kHz, and the audio worked.
When checking the AVI files with Mediainfo I noticed a strange entry in the general section:
    Code:
    Conformance errors : 1
     AVI : Yes
      INFO : Yes
       sTCO : Yes
General compliance : Element size 2628 is more than maximal permitted size 123 (offset 0xFE69)
But this could be resolved with a simple FFMPEG command:
    Code:
    ffmpeg -i corrupted.avi -c:v copy -c:a copy fixed.avi

For me, Scenalyzer was the winner, even when I had to rework the AVI files, but in the end everything worked.

@Name, I'm curious about whether DVDate would fix the audio in the files that appear to have it missing. Could you attach one of them for us to have a play with, or run DVDate yourself (it doesn't install; it's "portable")?

  12. Not that I don't want to upload a video, but these tapes just contain personal videos of other people. Therefore, I don't want to share it that publicly.

But I converted an affected Type 2 into Type 1. Type 2 was completely silent, and Type 1 just introduces some "white" noise sound. Nothing useful.
I believe because of the 32 kHz issue, there was no sound at all recorded because the duration is "440 ms" and the stream size is "55.0 KiB".

    Type 2:

@Name, understand, thanks for the update. It sounds like the camcorder didn't record the audio correctly if random scenes are playing up. There are various audio recording modes but I don't think they would produce the errors you're seeing.

  14. Honestly, these recordings are from 2007. With Scenalyzer I found a tool that was able to transfer everything and it worked. Therefore, I will not troubleshoot this topic further.
I'm just not sure if it is really the recording/tape itself, as the audio is playing on the camcorder. Furthermore, dvgrab and Scenalyzer were able to process the audio correctly, just WinDV had issues (with 32 kHz segments).

It was just interesting to see that 3 different tools produce 3 different outputs, even when the task looked rather simple: copying a miniDV tape via FireWire onto a PC.

Scenalyzer also has some options how to handle the different audio formats during the capture.
