Hi all, new to the forum.
I am 78 years young and old school! Remember the days you actually purchased (or free) actual software to exclusively use on your computer?
That is what I am looking for. No signup, no sign in, no account, no cloud, no posting on youtube, TikTok, etc, etc. Just me working on a video.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

look in the software section of ths site. For Non linear editors, look here

Openshot and Shotcut good for beginners, OpenShot the more basic of the two -
Windows 11 has a Video editor. It's pretty basic but it would get you started.

Kdenlive at the moment is the best open-source video editor.
It's like a sort of 100% free Premiere (not only the tools are the same, but the workflow is very similar) - that is a very good editing software (but it has that nasty and greedy subscription system that we all despise) - so I always suggest to invest some times to learn Kdenlive, the closest thing to Premiere you can find for free. Plus.. the development of the software is constant and well made (at least one major version per year and three-four minor updates with fixes and improvements)
It may require some time to learn the basics, but there are a lot of tutorial on YT and it's REALLY worth the effort. since, once learned, you will have a powerful and VERY versatile tool at your disposal.
PS: I've always found those basic and "simple" video-editing applications (and all the basic software in general) SO limited in functionality and with workflow SO poorly streamlined and inefficient that even doing basic stuff is often more difficult, unnerving and time-wasting than using a more advanced and sophisticated software instead.Last edited by krykmoon; 21st Mar 2025 at 17:19.

I broke into video editing back when Vegas Video was owned by Sonic Foundry . . . I don't know where Vegas is now . . . last I heard Magix owned it. In those days, video was captured on huge cameras that used tape (mine was 8mm), and capture was with another application (vidcap or some similar name) done in real time . . . very time consuming, but it worked.
I used to set up three cameras for my wife's school plays, make certain I had some sharp sound recorded at the session's beginning so that I could sync the tracks on the computer at home. Worked for me, although very time consuming.
I am retired now, down to just one little digital camcorder that more than fulfills my hobbiest needs, and still have a good time with shooting and editing video. I hadn't shot any video for quite some time, but a recent snow storm motivated me to dig out my camera. Paid video editors are behind me, now, so I had to do an online search for an application (Windows 11). I keep hearing good things about Kdenlive, but couldn't find the sort of online tutorial that I liked (most that I found started out with mini-lessons on what it takes to be a videographer. I kept looking and found some success with Openshot. It's not what I remeber Vegas as, but it has proven sufficient for my current needs. I skipped the tutorials and just started editing, and whenever I had to use a feature that I couldn't find or perform a task that I hadn't previously performed on that platforum, I just jumped on the net and typed a 'how to' question, and, in most instances, received instant solutions from unmanned internet sources. My little project is finished, and I am satisfied with it. Also, it was very satisfying to get my cam out and do some shooting with it. I'll be looking to do other projects . . . no deadlines, no pressure, and, of course, no money for me, either, but that's ok. Now I will 'work' just for fun.
I will probably give Kdenlive another go, or, perhaps, Blender which I have on my machine. There was a great set of tutorials that I worked through years ago on that software, but it is more complicated to work with that this little piece I'm using now.
This is my first post in this forum, but I hope to visit regularly.
Any and all comments welcome. Happy shooting/editing.
