Ok. Got it.
Another question. A very long time ago I used a program to copy DVD’s. I was a Dummy then and copied a bunch of them without even thinking to check if they worked. I went to a lot of work and took pictures of the DVD’s and printed copies of them out and put the copies of the labels onto the DVD’s using the system called CD Stomper. I loved this system. Really easy to used and made the DVD’s look really nice. Only when I went to play the DVD’s almost none of them worked correctly. In the middle of the DVD’s they world stop and I could not get them to start angain. All my very long hours of work and money down the drain! I never knew if the failure of the DVD’s was due to the production of the DVD’ or because I added a label to them.So now I am wondering about how to label these new DVD’s I am making. I do not want to mess them up. What do you use to label the DVD’s you Burn? Do you label them or just write on them? If you label them which labels give you the best results in picture quality and performance? If don’t recommend adding a label to the DVD what type writing Pen do you recommend? Any advice here really appreciated! Don’t want to mess my new DVD’s up.

I do not write on a DVD disc.
I do not print labels on DVD disc either.
I keep them in individual paper sleeves.
I use my printer to print the movie title on the paper sleeve.
I have a large cabinet made for DVDs.
I keep them in it in alphabetical order.
Commercial DVDs are pressed that is why labels do not interfere with them.
For your old DVDs that do not work correctly.
You can try to rip them.
ImgBurn can do this .
I would use DVDShrink & it's "Analyze" functions.
Even if it tells you analysis is not necessary.
Then burn them to a new DVD disc.
Just try a couple.
If those play OK then try more. -
It was likely the labels. As the glue dries it shrinks, pulling the outer edges of the DVDs up so the read heads can no longer read them. Carefully removing the labels will usually allow them to be read again. I used a product called GlueGone. Soak the label with GlueGone for 15 minutes then peal it off. Wash with dishsoap and water. Rinse with distilled water. Pat dry with a soft cotton cloth. Every labeled unreadable disc I had (all Verbatim AZO) were playable after that.
If you used crappy discs, your data may be bad too. There were only two consistently good brands: Verbatim DataLife AZO, and Taiyo Yuden. Brands like Sony and TDK were sometimes OK but those companies didn't manufacture their own discs. The quality varied on the manufacturer -- which varied with time.
<edit>
Oops, the cleaning product I mentioned is called Goo Gone, not GlueGone.

I would give jagabo's method a try.
I used to use a soft dust cloth but I now like a microfiber cloth.
I have some of the "terry cloth" type these are good for drying.
Then the smooth type for finer cleaning.
Mine came with new eyeglasses for cleaning the lenses.
Something like these:

Ok. I already trashed those old DVD’s. I never thought about removing the labels…. Darn. Thought they were useless and threw them away.
I am now concerned how to label my new DVD’s. I need suggestions on how to take care of this. Can I put good adhesive labels on them? Which ones? Write on them? With what? -
Likewise, I wouldn't stick anything on a disk.
Either write on them or use white, printable disks, if your printer can print on disks. Your imagination is your only limitation then! -
I write on mine with a Sharpie and haven't had any problems. Just tested a Taiyo Yuden burned in 2015 and no errors found.
-
Oh no. There goes my dreams of making real pretty dvd's. This saves me a lot of work and money any ways. I will just have to write on them I guess.
I downloaded and burned a dvd all by myself. Then I downloaded a blu ray movie and tried to burn it and I am stuck again. It downloaded fine. with the same exact size. I started the burn in Test Mode. It said like always Test Mode might not be supported by the current media dvd+r dl Data could be written to the disc would I like to continue? I choose Yes. Then it said: Your disc could still be empty /blank when the write operation has completed. do I want to continue in test mode? I was told before to choose seamless but I also have to choose one of the stars. Any idea which to choose and why? How do you know which to choose? How do I learn so maybe one day I will know how to choose without having to bother you all about it? Thanks! -
looks like my attachment did not attach. I'm trying
[Attachment 86090 - Click to enlarge] to add it again. -
@Zipsick, the green star. As per my webpage.
I wouldn't bother with test mode. -
Thank You again Alwyn! Good Night! I will be be brave tomorrow and try without the Test Mode.

Hello. Things have been going well thanks to your help! I just tried backing up a blue ray and checked it's sized. Darn it. It is a whopping 42.7 GB and my DL Discs only hold 8.5 GB so what do I do now. I want a good quality DVD. Do I find this DVD in a non blu ray copy and download it? Or take the blu ray download and resize it? What do you think on this? Thanks on this one!
-
I have NOT done a compression of a bluray many times.
I'm sure a member that has can give better advice than me.
The 42.7GB is probably the size of the bluray you ripped.
So as it should be.
AVStoDVD should be able to do this.
Some recommend Handbrake,BDRebuilder,or VidCoder.
So it can be done. -
ok. Thanks. I never used AVStoDVD really before. I am trying to get it to open a new project. I located the folder where I store my DVD backups. It is not recognizing any of my backup but just the one I want to resize. I can't get it to open this one I want to resize. I click in it. It does not highlight it in the File Name Box to Choose the File to Open. So something is wrong. Why wont AVStoDVD recognize My backup. Any ideas on this? I can download it again another way if this helps. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello. Just got a pop up message from Makemkv. They said they are shareware. I could evaluate the software fore 30 days and if I like it I could buy a key. I thought it was free as long as it was under the Beta Software. Then I heard you just had to re-download a key every so often..... Could you share what you know about all this. I did not know you could even buy it at this time.... if so how much? Can I just keep downloading a key? how do I even get a key? Never got one in the first place I don't think.....

[QUOTE=zipsick;2770734] ok. Thanks. I never used AVStoDVD really before.
You did use AVStoDVD early in this topic.
You do not have an AVStoDVD project file.
If you do it will be one you saved from an older project. It would be an *.a2d file. That is NOT what you need to use.
Explained above. I do not know why it even recognizes the one you want to resize.
Use either the Title pull down or the green + to add the file or files you want.
Do what Alwyn posted.
If using a commercial DVD or Bluray then Yes check the box.
AVStoDVD can do the conversion to DVD. It may not be the software you want to use.
This is because you previously posted you prefer the original menus.
AVStoDVD only creates its' own menu.
This is a how to for AVStoDVD. The writer of the how to used DVD5 (SL) but you can select DVD9 (DL).

Thanks Cholla! That is a lot of useful information through the conversion link you sent me. I just read through it. Not at home now but will try it latter. I’m still confused why they sell burners that burn Bou Ray DVD’s when you have to convert them to non Blu Ray quality in order to burn them? How un-needed. Thanks so much. Great detailed info!!

Thanks Jagabo for that info!!! I had some time as a passenger on a long drive today and did some research on discs. I see that Verbatim makes 25, 50 and 100gb discs. They are not cheap though. I looked around some. I like buying on Amazon as they have good pricing and have a great return policy if you have any problems with their products. I would really like to get a 50 pack of the Verbatim bd-r dl discs. I see I can save a lot of money if I buy the ones made in Japan. I read the reviews on them and People did say to made sure and only write at a slow speed which I would have done anyway. One Man said he had problems with loss of data after a few years. Other People seemed quite happy with the ones coming from Japan and a Google search said they were good quality. Do you know personally anything about these Verbatim Discs coming from Japan? Would you suggest staying away from them or should I give them a try? Any recommendations you have on buying Blank Recordable Blu Ray Discs would be greatly appreciated!!!! I plan on calling Verbatim Customer Servicectomorrow with a few questions too.
-
Didn’t mean to send yet. There were some People also selling the verbatim bd-r dl discs saying DataLife Plus. Do you know anything about this? Could not find out any info online about this either? Will ask Verbatim about this tomorrow too. The ones from Japan do not have this. Thanks again for any help.

Hello. Can You tell me what this error means?
File "/PS3_DISC.SFB" was skipped
This was the only error I got in the backup of the DVD. I am going to see if it still plays anyways. Thanks! -
Sorry but more errors. Do these errors mean the back up is trash? What a drag!

I have just lately been downloading Blu Ray Movies. I am getting a lot of errors. I am wondering if maybe Makemkv is not so good at doing this. Do you have any experience with using makemkv for downloading Blu Ray movies? Any recommendations for trying someone else out as well?
-
It is related to playing in a PS3.
Play Station 3 a video game console.
If you are not playing the disc in one of those no worries.
I will do my best at what I believe these errors are.
The rip may be OK open it with VLC & play it.
They may just be movie trailers or copyright warnings.
Hardware error meaning your optical drive could not read these.mts files.
Go into your folder containing these file & see if VLC will play them Either from the BD disc or folder ripped to.
Related to the Errors above. MakeMKV may not be able to decrypt these files.
I believe I posted this before.
MakeMKV may not decrypt some Blu rays.
Maybe not in the MakeMKV data base.
Some hardware the optical drive may not work very well or at all with MakeMKV.
There are two other decrypters that you might try.
DVDFab Passkey the trial & the free version after trial.
Or one I have not used or tested yet.
It has some things to do to get it set up .

Help again. I have successfully (i think)
[Attachment 86304 - Click to enlarge] downloaded 2 blu ray
movies without any errors. I try to play them with VLVMedia Player but am having problems getting them to open. When I go to open a file usually I would just double click on the movie I wanted to play and it would open and start to play. Now when I double click on my newly downloaded blu ray movie I get 3 folders instead of the movie just opening and playing. See attachment.
[Attachment 86301 - Click to enlarge]
I try Clicking on the first folder (BDMV) but that does not open the movie either. It just opens a bunch of other folders. See attachment.
[Attachment 86302 - Click to enlarge]
I play around opening all the folders and eventually I open the one called Stream. It contains a bunch of movie clips plus one of the movie itself. I was able to get the full movie to play but only after i clicked on all the clips and added all of them all at the same time to VLCMedia player to play. I dont know which clip is the actual movie. I guess I would have to go through each one and check for properties to see which clip was the same size as the original movie. See attachment.
when I get my ordered blu ray discs and am ready to burn what files do I burn? Do I burn ?The complete File Makemkv downloaded? Or do I need to find just the file clip of just the movie it created within the Movie download it created in the download folder called Stream?
Any help here appreciated! -
Usually selecting the Stream folder works.
If you Minimize VLC then I get balloon messages from the systray.
The movie will load from the title folder but it takes a while.
I can see the files VLC checks before loading the main movie .mts file.
I have not been able to get VLC to use blu ray menus.
I also have done some modifications to VLC so it plays most blu rays .
If you want to work with VLC to get it to play blu rays as good as it can there is work to do.
