Sorry if this is a dumb question. Ripping with makemkv save the files as a mkv file. But mkv files can’t be read on most dvd players. So what do I do? Convert them to another file type before burning? If so which file type should I convert them to? What is best? What file type is good without loosing quality? What type is best for burning? What program should I use to convert them? Trying to learn. Thanks!

A quick remux to MPG will be fastest, compatible with most players, and entails no loss of quality.
-
The op wants to burn to disc so it's best to use authored files cause lots of players dont like videos that are burned directly.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
refer to the other topic.
MakeMKV will only rip files to folders from a bluray not a DVD.
Use the baxkup function in MakeMKV to create an .ISO.
This .ISO will have DVD comp, iant Folders & files inside.
You should be able to burn the .ISO with ImgBurn if you mount it in a virtual drive.
If you need it DVD5 size DVDShrink can do this directly from the .ISO but you still need to burn it with IMGBurn.
DVDFab can also compress it to DVD5 size & burn it,
If you are burning to DVD9 or DL DVDs then you won't need to compress. -
@johns0,
What software do or would you use to compress to DVD5 ?
I have DVDFab software & I have used it for a long time.
It usually does a good job of ripping & writing a DVD.
I set the burn engine to IMGBurn in DVDFab.
Although I usually use the very old slysoft AnyDVD HD for my decrypter.
I only use DVDFab Passkey if slysoft AnyDVD HD doesn't work on a DVD.
Both of these will rip to a DVD9 but will not compress to DVD5 size.
Either will write to DVD folders/files or an .iso.
The main 3 DVD compressors I use are DVDShrink,CloneDVD 2 & DVDFab.
I have some others also. -
I downloaded AVStoDVD. It asked if I wanted to change it from PAL to ntsc. I said yes then hit start. It after a bit said finished. I checked the file it created. It would not play on my computer. only a 4.23kb file. What did I do Wrong. How do I get avstodvd to change my mkv file to a mpeg2 file? Details please.

Sorry. Can't find the log. This is what is listed in the output folder.
C:\Users\Owner\Videos
You say to see preferences/paths.
Where do I find preferences/paths?

I am so grateful for your help but I don't think I have provided you with the info you need.
Please explain again in detail how to find this log. -
The log will only created if the program starts to run.
It should be in what ever folder you set up here:
Here's what I have in mine.
Perhaps you should post some screen shots or take a video with your phone if you're not getting anywhere -
Hello. I am going to get some screenshots on what I'm doing. I started a new project using AVStoDVD. I start by choosing add title. I choose a mkv dvd download. Then I get this message. Warning! my title mkv download contains a ntsc compliant video stream. Do I want to change it from PAL to NTSC for this project? I don't know what to do here. But since it seems to have a problem with it's video stream I choose Yes to change it to NTSC. Is this right or should I have left it a PAL? I make no other changes to the program. Do I need to make any changes to settings or just use the default settings? I am adding a screenshot of what the program looks like now. attachment 1.I hit the start button. After a short time I get The AVStoDVD Progress Status 100% Window. I am attaching a Screenshot of this. attachment 2. Since it said 100% 100% I thought it would add a new dvd file to my video folder. Only my original dvd download was there. I checked it's properties to see if they had changed. The download was still a KMP Matroska file (mkv). See attachment 3. I think I have the log you were asking about. I went to preferences then to paths as you showed me. I am adding a screenshot of this for you to see. attachment 4. Since my dvd download did not change file type I must have done something wrong. Shouldn't I get another copy of the downloaded dvd with the file type as mpeg-2? After it said 100% complete there was no new downloaded download in the listed output folder. Please advise me how to use AVStoDVD to make my KMP download to a download I can burn to a dvd that will play in most dvd players. Let me know what I did wrong and let me know how to achieve my goal. Thanks!!!! Just realized my attachments shown are not in the order I added them. So the number I gave on the attachments is not right. You should be able to tell which is which anyways.

Do I want to change it from PAL to NTSC for this project
Zipsick, what are you actually trying to achieve out of all this, because it seems to me that you're torturing yourself unnecessarily.
If the aim is to simply put a video file on a disk and play it in your DVD player, all you need to do is start experimenting.
Start with that MKV.
If your DVD player won't play MKVs, convert it to the underlying container as explained by Davexnet in post 2. I have a guide for changing containers for MKVs to MPEG 2 here. For "MOV" substitute MKV and for the output set "MPEG 2-PS".
That will give you the original DVD video file contained in the MKV, and simply changes the container from MKV to MPG.
Your player might play that MPEG, or it might only play MP4s or it might play no files on a DVD (like my Panasonic 460).
If that file doesn't play in your DVD player, then use you can use DVDShrink to strip everything from the original DVD and create a VIDEO_TS folder with only the main movie in it and then you use IMGBurn to create a DVD from that folder. That file will play in your player for sure. -
@zipsick.
It would help members here to know exactly what you are attempting.
1.Is the DVD you are wanting to rip a commercial pressed movie DVD ?
2.What media are you going to write or burn the rip to ?
Meaning a DVD blank disc either DVD9 DL or DVD5 SL.
Or a HDD.
3.are you wanting just the Main Movie or do you want Menus also. -
I returned my player burner device and bought a better one. will get it Saturday. may have better luck with it.
I just want to take commercial DVD's , get them to my computer and burn them on blank DVD discs. I do have a couple DVD files downloaded to my computer in the mkv format. I tried converting them to a mpeg2 format using suggested software with no luck. I looked around and found a program called Prism Video File Converter. I added my mkv file to it. I had the option as to what format I wanted it saved to. I thought mpeg2 was a really good way but I did not see this option. It did have something called mov i thought was also a good recommended way to save so i choose it. I hit convert and it easily did this. now i have a mov format of the dvd i want to burn. 2 problems now.
1 What is the best format to convert the mkv format dvd file to for best playability and quality now that I can do this?
2 Why is there no sound?
My mkv download from makemkv when i play iy they have no sound. Is there an adjustment I have to make on my computer for it to play sound or did I not download the sound when I first downloaded it with makemkv? Is there a setting I missed to include sound with the download?
I was asked what I wanted to include on the burned DVD. I want my burned DVD to be just like the original DVD. to have all the title. Everything that is in the original DVD I want In the DVD I burn. Including menus.
I have not tried to burn anything yet because I don't have a file yet with the right quality and sound. When I do burn a DVD I am going to use a Verbatim DVD+r Dual Layer Printable Recordable Disc, 8.5 Gb, 8X, Data life with two AZO™ recording layers on a single-sided disc. Verbatim offers a
plus. I read these were really good.
Verbatim does offer this:
DVD-R 4.7GB 16X Ultra Life Gold Archival Grade with Branded Surface and Hard Coat.
Is this better? Should I use it instead?
Well this is what I'm up to now. Thanks for everyone's help!
I would really life feedback about why my downloaded videos have no sound. Thanks everyone!!!!!!!! -
If you want to make a copy of your DVD to re-burn it, and not to strip some parts of it, just copy (decrypted) whole VIDEO_TS folder to your HD and burn it using DVD mode in your burning software - ImgBurn is recommended. Some DVDs are not encrypted hence they don't require any special software to copy them.
-
Thanks. But do you know why I’m not getting any sound in my playback when I download with make makemkv? Also you say just copy the video ts folder and burn. I don’t understand this because using makemkv to copy dvd copies in mkv format which is not playable in a lot of players. So wouldn’t I first have to convert its format before burning it? What format would I convert it to? I was told the mkv format intcludes the mpeg2 files. Will using imgburn be able to pick those files out and burn just them from the mkv format without first converting them?
-
First some basics:
1.A DVD-R 4.7GB 16X Ultra Life Gold Archival Grade is what is called a DVD5 or single layer(SL).
This is not what you want to use because it requires compression of most commercial movie DVDs. Only about 4.35 GB will fit on this disc. Most commercial DVDs are larger than that.
2.A Verbatim DVD+r Dual Layer Printable Recordable Disc is what is called a DVD9 or dual layer(DL).This is what is made for a full rip of a commercial DVD.It is the one you want to use.
This is one method to do this:
1.Using MakeMKV select:Backup.
[Attachment 85840 - Click to enlarge]
Let MakeMkv complete the backup .iso.
Close MakeMKV.
2.Open ImgBurn.
If you are using EZ-Mode Picker select "Write image file to disc".
"Browse for a file" & select the .iso MakeMkv created.
[Attachment 85841 - Click to enlarge]
When you select the Write button you should get a "Create Layer Breal Position" window.
Select the layer break usually the one with the best colored star. But any that you want.
Continue with the Write & if ImgBurn gives you Naming options add the name you want.
ImgBurn may ask for the layer break again.

I'm out of DL DVDs right now so I'm doing part of this from my memory.
If you want to check the .iso first you need to mount it in a virtual drive.
Or VLC media player can play the .iso direct.
This should work like the DVD would.
I believe this method will have Audio tracks. -
Hello. Got new Device. Tring gain. I opened makemkv as shown and started backup. i see this in the box below. is there a problem?
MakeMKV v1.17.9 win(x64-release) started
Saved FW dump file as C:\Users\Owner/.MakeMKV/dump_FW_CD2860D1B8E81B285CDE.tgz

Region setting of drive PIONEER:BD-RW BDR-XS07U does not match the region of currently inserted disc, trying to work around...
It said done. So I went to the back up and played it using the program called VLC Media Player. again there was no sound. There is something wrong with the settings on my computer not allowing sound. I have checked my speakers and they are working properly. Do you have any idea as to why I have no sound during play back? I have not followed the rest of your steps yet. I will not be able to do this until latter. I will get back to you after I can do this. Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated! -
I do not know about the Audio track & sound problem.
Try a different commercial DVD preferably an older one.
See if you get the FW dump file.
FW stands for firmware.
I have not had much success reading dump files.
From what I have read about this error in MakeMKV:
It can be from a movie release that is newer than the decrypter in MakeMkv can decrypt.
Except that you also get a "Region setting of drive PIONEER:BD-RW BDR-XS07U does not match the region of currently inserted disc"
This would be if you are trying to play a Region 1 DVD is a drive that is set to Region 2 or another Region.
I do not set a Region on my drives so the show Region none.
ImgBurn can set the Region.
There are only 5 times that a region can be set on a drive.
Then it is locked. Some drives a firmware flash will reset to 5 times again.
For the sound also try a different DVD. See if it has sound.Last edited by cholla; 1st Mar 2025 at 17:27.

The MakeMKV backup creates an .ISO.
The .ISO contains a standard DVD Folder/file set inside the image.
MediaInfo will not read an .ISO.
If the .ISO is mounted in a virtual drive the a .vob file could be read with MediInfo.
If it is a good .vob it will have an Audio track or more than one. -

Right-click on the ISO and choose Open With Windows Explorer (you might need to use the expanded RC menu if you're on Win 11).
The ISO will be mounted as drive and the VIDEO_TS folder will be displayed; double click on it to get access to one of the VOBs.
Then use Media Info to see the attributes of one of the VOBs; video details are shown first followed by the audio details (if audio is present).
To "unmount" your ISO, in the left pane of Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive holding your ISO and choose "Eject". -
@Alwyn ,
I did not ask what OS zipsick is using.
My OS as we have discussed before is Windows 7 32-bit.
Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit will not open an .ISO with Windows Explorer.
I have long used Virtual Clone Drive by Elby.
I also have the DVDFab virtual drive on another PC.
I have not had any problems with them.
7-zip will open an .ISO & can extract all or an individual .vob.
The MediaInfo can be used on that. -
