  1. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can crop a video I have screen recorded in OBS video to 4:3?. I captured the recording at 1920x1080 (capturing the whole screen area), but I am wanting to crop off the black borders to the left and right and make the video 4x3. I've tried Handbrake by cropping the sides but it doesn't seem to crop the video. thanks.

  2. You have to crop 240 pixels from the right and 240 pixels from the left and re-enode as 1440x1080 (=4:3)

I find Handbrake's cropping screen isn't intuitive. To achieve what you want, set it up like this:

Thanks for that. Yeah I did try and change the size, but it kept changing the 1080 to a different number, no idea why. Can changing the aspect be done in any other program besides Handbrake, one that will allow me to trim the video?. I know Handbrake has an trim/edit feature but it's not very good IMO.

Edit: Just noticed it's because I didn't click "none" for resolution limit.

Basically you're after a video editor. The venerable VDub2 is free and pretty simple to use. My Start to Finish guide here.

There are probably other, more-modern freeby out there. Have a look at the video editors in the software section on VH.

But VDub can't crop a video, or can it?

Absolutely, and better still, it shows you the actual cropped size; you visually drag in the sides to crop off what you want. You can more easily keep track of maintaining the 4:3 ratio.

PS: Use VDub2. In VDub1, there's no specific "crop" filter; you have to invoke another filter first, then the "cropping" button comes alive. Silly system which was ditched in VDub2.

    Ok thanks, that sounds good.

Also, AVIDemux will crop visually. See my guide here.

Can't tell whether you know: the "null transform" filter is there for this purpose. VDub2 added a dedicated "crop" filter but hasn't removed "null transform" and the original Cropping system. (AFAIK; I haven't updated in forever.)
My YouTube channel with little clips: vhs-decode, comparing TBC, etc.

Shutter Encoder, maybe to your liking:

    Quickly crop your images

By using the "Image" function you will have the possibility to quickly and easily crop your images as well as your videos. You can define your frame precisely by writing directly your values in pixels.

I tried Avidemux and it does enable you to crop the borders. I think using Avidemux is better than with Handbrake if you intend to also trim/edit videos easily and encode. I suppose using a dedicated editing program like Adobe Premiere or something free to use like VSDC is better if you intend to add text and effects as well as trim the files.
