I have been searching here for a fix for my Pioneer Dvd Recorder DVR-550-H after a power failure. Thank-you for all the great advice but it was much beyond me. I tried this just now & got all my video recordings back! I hope this can help someone in future who is still trying with these old wonderful recorders. These are my notes how I just fixed it...
FIRST HAD A POWER FAILURE TELLING ME HARDDRIVE CORRUPT. MUST REINITIALIZE & LOSE ALL FILES. NO DON'T DO!!
I FIXED MY CORRUPT DVD RECORDER!! HERE'S HOW..

AFTER RESTARTING, UNPLUGGING & UNPLUGGED OVERNIGHT THEN OFF/ON OFF/ON TO NO AVAIL I THEN..IT WAS SO EASY.....

    1. SET TIME DATE.
    2. INITIAL SETUP CLOCK.
    3.THEN RUN SETUP NAVIGATOR.
    4. RUN AUTO CHANNEL.
    5.RUN MANUAL CHANNEL.
    WHAT FIXED IT WAS RUNNING
AUTO CHANNEL SETTING BUT STILL NOT FIXED.
RAN MANUAL CHANNEL SETTING THEN & PRESSED TOP MENU & TITTLES ALL APPEARED!! WHAMMO!!
329 VIDEOS & CONCERTS ALL BACK!!
THIS IS 2 X LUCKY NOW!!
HOPING FOR SUCCESS FOR YOU ALL!!

    Thanks for sharing.
I have a Pioneer recorder but different model. It has 160GB Hard Disk Drive.
Now that you have all the recordings back, I would recommend copying them to DVD discs and rip them to an external HDD. You will need to do this for as many DVD's as need be and it is time consuming. I had a lot of recordings and did this few months ago and now I have zero recordings on my hard drive. I used only one DVD-RW disc and formatted it again and again so that I wouldn't have a box of DVD's doing nothing.

Using a capture card is even a better idea.
