  1. I am using all the usual dongles to get from my Panasonic mini DV camera to Thunderbolt on my Mac Studio, but the camera is not showing up on Quicktime input. It was before, but now it isn't. Concerned it might be one of the four dongles, but when I plug the camera into Thunderbolt on my M1 MacBook Air and try to input via Quicktime, there it is, so clearly the dongles are fine. Any idea what could be causing it not to appear on my Mac Studio all of a sudden?

what model of Panasonic mini DV camera do you have ??
If your Panasonic mini DV camera is not showing up in QuickTime, you can try a few troubleshooting steps. First, ensure the camera is fully powered on and connected to the computer via FireWire. Check if the camera appears in System Information under Hardware & FireWire. If it does not appear there, the issue might be with the FireWire port or cable. Additionally, try connecting the camera to another computer or using a different FireWire cable to rule out hardware issues.

When attempting to connect a Panasonic mini DV camera to a Mac using a FireWire cable through a Thunderbolt adapter, the camera may not show up in QuickTime Player due to compatibility issues with newer macOS versions. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue:

Check Connections: Ensure that the Panasonic mini DV camera is properly connected to the FireWire cable, and the FireWire cable is correctly connected to the Thunderbolt adapter. Verify that the Thunderbolt adapter is plugged into a Thunderbolt port on your Mac.
System Information: Open "System Information" (also known as "System Report") by going to Apple Menu > About This Mac > System Report. Under the Thunderbolt or FireWire section, check if the camera and the adapter are recognized. If the camera does not appear, the issue might be with the adapter or the camera itself.
Alternative Software: Since QuickTime Player is not recognizing the camera, you can try using other software like iMovie or Final Cut Pro to import the video. These applications may have better compatibility with older devices.
Update macOS: Ensure that your macOS is up to date. Sometimes, updating the operating system can resolve compatibility issues with older hardware.
Legacy Support: If you are using macOS Sonoma 14.1 or later, you may need to enable "legacy support" for the camera to be recognized. You can find instructions on how to do this in Apple's support documentation.
Alternative Adapters: If the current adapter is not working, try using a different FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter or a direct FireWire connection if your Mac has a FireWire port.
External Software: If none of the above steps work, you might need to use external software or hardware solutions such as a video capture device to transfer the video from the camera to your Mac.

  3. Thanks for the reply, but as I say, the cables work fine on my MacBook, so it can't be the cables/dongles. I've also tried a different port on the Mac Studio. Both Macs are on the same latest Sonoma OS. It doesn't show up in FCP as well as QT. If it works on the MacBook, why doesn't it work on the Mac Studio?
