Any talk of Smart Media Cutter please take it to the dedicated thread here, that is the right thread to discuss how it works, not in here.

@ Jack75 .......... If you want to try VRD i might be able to help you if you send me a PM.
If only removing adverts from TV shows or movies then SMC should be all you need, and SMC will change your .TS container files to .MP4 without recoding.
Good Luck

For what it is worth, someone has posted details of a cross-platform software they have called "VRD Next". It's currently freeware & available as a python script - you need to compile it with python or run the script in python. Details here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/videoredo/comments/1v2u95t/vrd_next_a_crossplatform_videoredo_lite_editor/
And also here:
https://github.com/infidelus/vrd-next
I've got health issues at the moment so not able to run it through its paces to see how well it works. -
Thanks for this info, i do have a few things to say or add to the conversation in the first link you posted, but i hate Reddit so i won't be diving into any of the stuff being posted there.
I get the feeling that this new VRD is not going to be developed to a level anywhere near what the original VRD was, so for me it would be pretty much pointless to even bother with, and i now have my own version of VRD Pro completed some time ago that can be activated on a new machine and works with Windows 11.
I wish the Developer of SMC would get back to his Thread here in this forum and update us with any new developments, because i still believe that SMC will eventually be the replacement tool for VRD TvSuite and Pro versions, as soon as he gets cracking on adding the few remaining features still missing, but at the moment i believe that it is still the closest thing to VRD so far. -

No suggestion of intelligent recode either.
Still, it's another project in early days. It may come to something or fizzle out.
According to the reddit thread it seems DanR has abandoned his plans to develop his version of VRD.
And yeah, reddit is pretty much a cesspit at the best of times. I mostly just lurk there, following a handful of forums of relevance for me, the VRD one being one of them. -
Reddit is just such a dumb format for a forum, and i still don't get why it is so popular, i just find it to be a bogwash.

Further to VRD Next. I've not had a chance to look at it yet (health issues ATM mean I can't sit at the pc for long). It's a one-person project, but open source. The dev is happy to do any needed bug fixes and also willing to try to incorporate recommended features. It has frame accurate cutting and some form of intelligent coding. It also has QSF (quick stream fix). Saves files as mp4 or mkv, handles subtitles, has an automatic advert detection & removal feature, tho' I doubt that will work in Australia for the same reason the same feature in VRD does not work.
The downside is it only comes as a python script, so you need to have python installed. It does come with a windows bat file that automates the install, or manual instructions for the more daring.
ATM there're several bug fixes and.or updates a week, so it's being pretty actively maintained & developed.
The GUI is similar enough to VRD that VRD users should find it easy to use without having to read the help documentation but it's not, I hasten to add, exactly the same, so no copyright or patent infringements. The dev is (was) a long time VRD user who had videos VRD couldn’t handle, so they created a VRD inspired replacement for their own use and have decided to release it for others to use.
Oh, and whilst one can discuss it on reddit, one could also discuss it on github. -
Hi everyone, well it seems very quiet in here with not very much being posted for quite some time.
I just came back in here to report that Smart Media Cutter, a tool that i initially had high hopes for as being a possible replacement for VRD, has come to an end according to a private message that i got from the Developer today after i sent him a message to ask why nothing had been done in with SMC during the past few months.
It was a combination of many factors, but it would appear that time, and the financial cost to him was not favorable to continue.
He offered me a refund of my license fee, i declined, i am just sad that he could not continue as he had what i consider to be the best cutting tool out of all VRD clones i have tried, it had the fastest seeking to cut frames, the video preview screen was the smoothest, and his Smart Render export mode (Same As Source) was the fastest i have seen as well.
His Full Recode mode had not yet had Intelligent Recode implemented so it worked very much like Handbrake and Avidemux, which i personally don't like having to set my own export speed and quality, but the testing i did using 4k AV1 and HEVC files was promising, sadly he had not implemented Titles either.
I will be using it to do my 4k HEVC Smart Cutting and exporting back to HEVC because my VRD Pro is too slow and laggy when seeking to my Cut points, but i will stil be using VRD for everything else i need to do with my Cut files, such as adding titles and exporting to other formats etc.
I have tested the highly anticipated Snipwright, unfortunately for me it is not anywhere near what i anticipated it might be, the GUI is close to VRD, but it is lacking a lot right now, and i can't use it for the type of work i do.
https://github.com/infidelus/snipwright/discussions
I also started testing a tool called SmartCut64, and for me, this tool is the closest to VRD out of all of the so called VRD clones, the menu layout along the top of the GUI is almost identical to VRD, i can import and use my own VRD export profiles, it has the same Joiner Tool and Title Creation tool, same Batch Tool, and it has an Intelligent Smart Render feature as well, just like in VRD, plus a bunch of other stuff that i personally don't really need.
https://linekerpandi.com/smartcut64
I can import 4k AV1 and 4k HEVC files, i can cut and export my AV1 files to HEVC in very fast time (around double the duration of the source file)
When it comes to exporting (Smart Render) my files back to their original format (Same As Source) the export will work, but i need to test further to make sure it is working as it should, looks promising tho.
Adding Titles in the Joiner Tool is fixed now, thank god.
The Developer is working on the project every day and was releasing new builds almost daily (up until 4 days ago) so i am hopeful that some time soon if the Smart Render (Same As Source mode) is indeed working, i would definitely give this tool my vote as a very close Clone to VRD for my own personal needs.
How these VRD clones perform for TV broadcast purposes i have no idea.Last edited by Bridgy; 29th Sep 2026 at 12:08.

Hi Bridgy - have you updated to the latest version of SmartCut64? Those two issues sound like ones I fixed last week. If you have, and are still experiencing this, can you email me the details so I can fix... thanks!

Using 1.0.23 at the moment.
Titles now work, albeit very slightly different to how it works in VRD, but it works for AV1 and HEVC files, i just can't locate the Title duration time and any fade in or outs it might have.
4k AV1 to 4k HEVC works great.
AV1 to AV1 or HEVC to HEVC Smart Render i still need to test further tomorrow, i think i got the HEVC to HEVC to work, but the AV1 to AV1 was not so good, i think the issue may be in the profiles list somewhere, but i will report back in your Thread tomorrow.
If this Smart Render (Same as Source) works tomorrow, then i would say that SC64 has achieved what i needed VRD to do, so i am crossing my fingers.
I will report back on the small issue with the Title editor as well, but it does work. -
Shame about SMC since it held promise to meet 4k needs.
Still, after several years where the only option was to nurse VRD along, we now have a bunch of VRD forks and clones, all heading in different directions and catering to different markets. That in itself shows how powerful VRD was that it could meet the needs of such a wide market.
Of the VRD clones, SMS and SC64 seem to be more aimed at the higher end video editing market, designed for working with 4K video and the like, whereas Snipwright is aimed at editing TV recordings, which are almost everywhere HD at best. Snipwright has advert detection & removal, intelligent recode and all the tv-editing features from VRD .. but like VRD it has very limited support for anything above HD video because it is designed for editing recorded tv. Basically it is VRD as DanR left it, with a few features removed and a few issues fixed. Given that broadcast TV looks likely to remain as either SD or HD for the foreseeable future (for technical & financial reasons), as TV editors VRD & Snipwright don't really need 4K support.
The way things are, if you need 4K editing, then you'll have to pursue the same path Bridgy has, but if you are just editing tv recordings then IMO your best option is to nurse VRD as long as you can. I've looked into Snipwright and for HD tv recordings it does the job and seems to work as well as VRD. But it has drawbacks .. apart from effectively little or no 4K support, it also comes as a collection of python scripts, not an installed executable, so installing and updating it is not quite as simple as downloading an installer and just running that. On the other hand, the scripts work on any platform, so mac users dont have to worry about running it in a windows emulator. Snipwright is also a mature product - it has been under development since about 2017.
As for me, as long as I can nurse VRD along, that'll meet my needs. Worst case there I can install an image of my current w11 boot drive with VRD into a VM and use that if and when VRD stops working with windows. Otherwise I've got snipwright as a backup. -
I am hoping to get back to my testing of the SM64 Smart Render (Same as Source) exports in both 4k AV1 and HEVC (more importantly HEVC than AC1) tonight, just need to see if the issue i have is in the export profiles i made, or the ones imported from my VRD.
Just want to do another test with the Titles as well, and i need to have Title duration and fades included if they are not there already, as i tried to find the options in the Title editor but couldn't see it there (i might just be blinder than i thought) -
What happened to the Post written by Crown, i got an email notification and read it on my phone, but i can't see it on this page.

You're not imagining things .. I saw that post here yesterday, but today it's gone. Since there was nothing controversial in it to upset a moderator, I assume the OP removed it or cancelled their account, hence also removing their posts (if it works that way).
