Win 10. Is it still good to go (UK broadcast streaming) ?

A few days ago, I started a topic 'bout issues I now have with my Chrome Browser and Win7 (back in the day I was really reluctant, despite the 'free' upgrade, 'cos I simply did not need it).

I figured that an alternative option to a hardware solution would be to upgrade Win7 to Win10 - I have read that Win11 can now be installed on 'old' hardware but I will not go down that road right now.


Sure I know that Win10 will not, if not has not already been, be supported by Microshaft but I guess that is not critical - sure my Win7 still functions fine despite support.


So the 'idea', as an alternative to the gizmo's i.e. Roku etc., would be a OS upgrade plus a browser upgrade.


My only concern is that this combination is still supported, for now by the major UK streaming sources. I-player still works over Win7 but what about ITVx ?

Get Windows 11, it's mature now and works very well. Windows 10 support ends this fall.
You hardware must be 64bit of course.

^^ Like I said, Win7 still works fine, for general tasks, despite no support. So I would guess that Win10 would be likewise since all would not, nor could not, upgrade to Win11.

Your hardware may not support Windows 11 because you need a special feature for the CPU so you are right to consider Windows 10 to upgrade. As ProWo suggested, install the 64 version.
My Dell laptop is one that can't be upgraded to Windows 11.
There might still be a tool to test if your hardware can support Windows 10. If yes then use Windows 10 Pro instead of the Home version.
My advise is to do a clean install from scratch instead of upgrade. I would highly recommend using an SSD if your current storage is HDD. 500GB should be more than enough.
You will need to backup everything of course.
You will need to pay for the license. You can find several websites that offer Windows license if you search Google.
Even if this doesn't resolve your issue with ITVx, the upgrade will make your machine faster, especially if you have a new SSD.

But the whole point of an upgrade, for me, is to get something that my present OS/browser can not get. In my case ITVx. Without a def. 'Yes' I can not nor will not go down that road.

You can use Oracle VirtualBox to create a partition that you can allocate to Windows 10 and test if ITVx works as you wish. You will probably need about 40GB or less.
I used that to test Linux and other operating systems and then deleted the partition.
Not sure if you will need a Windows 10 license to install but if you MUST then buy a retail version of Windows 10.

Well according to the documentation, you require at least Win10 to start with. So this is a non-starter for me.

Microsoft will allow consumers 1 more year of Windows 10 support til Fall of 2026 if they pay something like $30 for support which is updates and such, but yes buying new hardware or installing Windows 11 bypass update will be required for older hardware.

You can try making your PC have dual boot. Windows 7 and Windows 10
