  1. I have a Canon Vistura camcorder that I am trying to capture videos to my computer. The camera has a DV output the computer does not. I bought a firewire DV to IEEE-1394 but it only works on Sony cameras. Is there a cable out there that would work on my Canon?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

When you connect your camera with cable to firewire card in your PC, have you tried to run program like WinDV? I checked manual for your camera and don't see reason why it shouldn't work. Also not sure why only Sony should work. Probably you need 4pin.

  4. The camera is a Canon Vistura-Mini DV and uses the DVC cassettes.

When I plug the DV end into the camera and the USD end into my computer my computer issues an error message says the computer does not recognize the USB? The IEEE1394 cable end is a 4-Pin. The cable that came with the camera has the same 4-Pin plug on both ends.

Vistura! I absolutely apologize I have never ever come across that Canon naming protocol. I will now sit in a corner in silence.

Hold it. Simple Firewire to USB cables do not work. They can't because the protocols are completely different. They can be bought, but they are a con.

The camera has a DV output the computer does not.
Can you confirm your PC does not have a Firewire port?

There are a few options for DV transfer, but we need to know what your PC has now before we start.

  8. The only ports my computer has are USB A & C and does not have a firewire port.
    Thanks

If your computer does not have a firewire port you can't use that camcorder, Either install a firewire card or buy a camcorder that can stream DV over USB (very specific models can do this), the last option is to get a Pinnacle firewire to USB converter such as the 500-USB or 700-USB, but getting one these obsolete devices to work under newer OSs is a pain.

@Mrtado, have a browse through my DV notes here. The options Dellsam mentioned are covered. Probably the simplest would be to get one of Pinnacle USB boxes. My 710-USB, while a dead duck for analogue capture still works great as a DV transfer device to your PC via USB.

If you're a bit of a techie, have a crack at the PCIe Firewire cards.
