There seems to be quite a bit of information on replacing a hard drive on a Pioneer DVD recorder, and that you need the service remote control and the DVD. What about replacing the DVD writer? About six months ago my recorder would say no disk when I would insert a blank DVD, or when it did see the disk it would give an error when initializing or wouldn’t write to the disk. I used a disk cleaner and after it worked fine again. Since then I have had to use the cleaner disk a few more times and today no longer seems to help. I have a few DVD recorders I have purchased over the years when I would see them for sale. I also have a few DVD writers out of old computers and wondered if a persian can just swap the DVD writer without having a service remote? I have considerable experience with computer repairs so have no problem opening up the recorder or swapping drives as long as I know if anything else is required like it seems to be for swapping a hard drive in one of these.
    Thanks.

I think replacing the DVD drive is possible but this Pioneer DVD recorder has most probably an IDE DVD drive interface. Open the box and see if you can read the DVD drive model and it's interface. Then have a similar drive at hand and do the swap.
What is your recorder exact model? There are plenty of videos on YouTube that can help you with this.
    Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just wanted to be sure you didn’t need a service remote to pair it to the machine. The one I am having the issue with is a DVR-650H. The other one I use regularly is a DVR-550H but seldom write to DVDs with it. I have several other ones as well but they are a bit older machines. I think any of the DVD writers I have would be IDE.
    Thank you

As a tech I've sometimes had success with a failed DVD reader/writer just adding a small drop of light oil to the DVD spin motor shaft, just above the motor's phosphor bronze bearing. While in there I've manually cleaned the laser lens. I have a Pioneer DVR-520H and a DVR-530H. Both are still working fine.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll do that when I have it apart.
