  1. Does it compress all 6 channels into 2 channels or does it just retain front left and front right while discarding the other four channels? Thanks.

    You can use clever FFmpeg-GUI to downmix your 5.1 file to stereo. There are more than one options, so you are not stuck with one result you may not be pleased with.

    When mp4 or mkv file is transferred to DVD as DVD video PAL, there is an option to express the audio as 2 or 6 channels, depending on the original mp4/mkv file.

    I would prefer 2 channels in the end product, but wonder if that meant losing the audio of the remaining 4 channels (for files with 6 channels).

  4. Try it and find out. But most down-mixers include all channels with weighting.
