I use CBR. In fact, I use the RT_CBR (real-time constant/controlled bitrate) setting. My eyes cannot see the difference between RT_CBR and regular CBR. So, since the pop-up window in TMPGEnc says not to use it, I am being a rebel.

Just for the record, I've used the fxVHS filter - it's quite remarkable. It does a marvelous job getting rid of those kind of streaky wavy lines that tend to run across VHS (or in my case S-VHS) tapes. I just used it in it's default configuration and it worked well. I've found that using it first, followed by the temporal cleaner filter in virtual dub does a very good job cleaning up VHS tape.
