I am having trouble playing VCDs (.dat) on my computer. Windows Media Player does not work (give an error message that file format is not supported). I tried downloading the latest Windows Media Player & DirectX, but to no avail. What's nore, my friend using exactly the same Windows Media Player is able to play VCDs. Microsoft helpline informed me that since *.dat files are not supported by the Media Player, they do not guarantee that it will work, although it might. Can anyone help.

Just to make sure: You loaded WMP, clicked on "File" >>> "Open" >>> changed the extension to "all files" and chose your MPEGAV directory on your CD Drive? This works for most people.
However if this operation failed, I suggest using VCDGear (tools section of this website) and converting the dat to mpeg.
