  1. Hello All. I'm very new to the art of DVD.

I have "come upon" various .mkv files from the internet that I would like to burn to a dvd so that I can watch them on tv's. This has turned out to be much more difficult than I anticipated.

    - I would like the format and disc type to be widely compatible with non-PC drives/players
    - Most of the .mkv files are 6-8gb

Before I describe my journey, it might be best if you just suggest the simplest route to success.

Journey: I started with DVD+RW (4.7gb). This wasn't large enough for most of my .mkv files. So I used Lossless Cut to snip them in half. Then I learned about MPEG-2. I used Lossless Cut to export various mpeg types to no avail, and I tried Filestar for conversions as well. I got some DVD+R DL because of the 8.5gb capacity, hoping this would simplify my plight. Then I cooked my brain reading into codecs, video formats, etc. Then I learned about X-Box consoles varying file compatibility (thus giving me false negatives?), so now i'm only using my dvd player. Then I learned about .VOB. I'm chasing my tail. Please halp :')

  2. @davexnet that's a valuable resource indeed. I spent a good while reading that before posting. While I have a better idea of what may work, I still have questions. I've already spent a lot of time and some resources trying do this so I consider my 'due diligence' paid- enough to consult the community before I go further.

For regular DVD, once the mpeg-2, DVD compliant assets are created,
The have to be "authored" before written to disk.
This step creates the Video_TS folder, with it's IFO and VOB files

You can try an all in one package that prepares the assets and authors the disk
    eg., AvstoDvd or DVDstyler

I don't know how old your TV's are but did you consider/investigate the possibility to play the videos directly on your TV?
Using a USB storage, media player or something of a DLNA server, it would save you so much hassle of endless converting.
I have here a "old" Samsung TV from 2014, it can play quite a lot of formats.
No h265/HEVC but then most "MKV scene" files are still released as H264 format.

But then again, you can have your reasons to still want to make DVD's of course.
